Hello! I need information on how i can immigrate to canada. I have a real close friend of mine that wants to get an appartment with me, so we can live together and work together. he is also going to be starting collage soon, and i would like to as well if i can get the funding. I have no idea how to even begin gathering the information for me to immigrate to canada. i currently live in west virginia and i would like to go to new brunswick to live with him. I heard you need some type of credit rating, but i'm unsure what the exact value is, and what other documents i would need. Even just a visit would do me fine til i'm able to fully immigrate up to canada. All information would be greatly appreciated! :) thanks! :)

It sounds as if you have quite a bit of homework to do on your project. Check out this link and research the different ways to immigrate. It takes a lot of hard work and determination.....and a bit of luck.

The various options to immigrate or visit are outlined at http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/index.asp. You can see which you qualify for and ask questions.

For example, depending on what your nationality is and what your educational background, and work experience are in addition to what real close friend means (romantic relationship?) you may be eligible for different options.

I think your most successful route may be to apply for a student visa, but you will have to prove WHY you want to study in Canada and have a compelling reason for your choice of school and programme. You will have to prove (whether it is for a travel or study visa) that you will return to the US before your visa expires which means you MUST have strong ties to your home country (finances, job, family, property - not things that most 19 year olds will have at their fingertips). Studying in Canada is VERY expensive if you are not a Canadian or landed immigrant so you will have to show that you have the funds for school AND living expenses. This is all spelled out in the Study section. The other thing about immigration is that you can't just say "I want to immigrate". You have to have something to offer Canada. Without a profession or trade or higher education, well???
You said you live in WVirginia, but are you an American citizen? If so, then you can come up to Canada for a visit without a visa. You would have to be careful to convince the VO that you are not going to overstay, so have a travel itinerary, get a job at home and have sufficient funds. Be low key about the romance.
I wonder if OhCanadiana can add some more??

Pippin pretty much covered the options.

On a more personal note, hard as it may seem, you may want to consider staying in the US and completing your studies where you can afford them and visit each other over holidays, etc. Over time, should you decide to marry you can decide to move to Canada (with him sponsoring you) or having him come back to the US (with you sponsoring him once you complete your studies and are more financially established). Many people are able to have long-lasting long-distance relationships so it *is* possible.

Good luck whatever you decide :)

If you're a US citizen with no criminal record, all you need for a visit is just your passport and some evidence that you'll return to the US at the end of your stay. Return plane tickets if you fly; a copy of your class schedule if you're attending college in the US (I've never needed to show either of them, but they do ask and I make sure I have the evidence just in case I get a skeptical border guard). It's generally pretty simple.

Answer the agent's questions honestly, but don't volunteer more information than they ask for (they don't need to know that you're hoping to marry him some day, for instance). If they do give you a hard time, remember they're just trying to protect Canada and try and stay calm. Even now that DH and I are married (and we say so), crossing the border is usually painless.

alright, thank you :) i'll look into how to get a pass port and i think the best option for me right now is to stay where i am, and visit when i'm able to then try to move close to the border. then later possibly immigrating there :)
