Hi,

I am not from India and I am not in Canada yet, I am however a physio and I have many Indian colleagues here who have moved to Canada and many who are at various stages of the process, and I am also currently at the exam phase of the licensing process so I hope I can be of help.

1).To the best of my knowledge, the outcome of your credential evaluation with the Alliance depends largely on which institution you completed your training in India and the year of your graduation. Your best guide is to find out the outcome for anyone from your training college in your year of graduation who had completed the Alliance evaluation. In general, most people who graduated with a B.Sc Physio, B.Physio, B.PT etc should not have too many deficiencies to overcome. You may have to do some remedial courses to overcome the deficiency or demonstrate to your credential evaluator that you have acquired enough post training experience in clinical practice to make up for the deficiency in your training. If you need to take some courses, the Alliance now have different flexible options to help. This is done through a process called PLAR - Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition. The Alliance will provide relevant information to help you should you need to go through this route. See more details here http://www.alliancept.org/pdfs/credential_faq_2010_eng.pdf

2). Physiotherapy assistant is largely an unregulated profession in most (If not all) provinces in Canada, you may very well apply for a physio assistant job from outside, but most employers in my opinion may prefer candidates who are already on the ground and have some level of knowledge of the system. I think completion of the credential evaluation may help to overcome this. Subject to conditions, some provinces e.g British Columbia may offer you a limited/temporary licence upon completion of your credential evaluation, others e.g Ontario and Alberta would issue temporary licence only upon completion of the 1st stage of the exam (i.e written component) but note that there are terms and conditions for this and the validity of such licences are very short.

Bottom line is, if you haven't started already, you need to start applying for your credential evaluation now while you are still back in India as it would save you a lot of time money and energy regardless of whether you intend to get a PT assistant job or go straight to a PT job when you land in Canada.

I hope this helps and all the best.

Hi 9jcanada,

This was informative.
One more thing i want to ask is which provience credentials are easy to clear n where jobs are more?
As I have heard tht all proviences hav separate bodies to evaluate n give license.

Regards,
Kg

Hi kg,

There are two stages to your question: The credentialing process and the Licensing process. One precedes the other, but let's take them one by one:

1). In Canada, the credential evaluation requirement is not province specific as you have in the US. The Alliance sets the requirement and evaluates the credentials of every applicant against a uniform set of criteria regardless of which province you intend get your licence. Successful completion of the credentialing process entitles you to sit the 2 stages of the competency exams. Once you've passed the exams then you move on to the Licensing Stage (Easy sage ;))

2). The Licensing requirement is the prerogative of each Province, the requirements are however very similar across almost all the provinces (Except Quebec). The major crux of it is that you pass the 2 stages of the exams, all provinces require this to have a full/unrestricted licence. The variation exists in the extra requirements (apart from passing the exam which is non-negotiable for all provinces) e.g English/French language test, level of 3rd party insurance coverage etc. These are usually minor requirements that anyone who have gone through the credentialing-exam phase should be able to meet with ease.

Job availability: To the best of my knowledge, the job prospect for PTs in Canada is very god for now and in the future. The major challenge for foreign trained PT is to scale through 1 & 2 above. As to where the jobs are? I'll say they are every where depending on what you want for yourself and where you will like to be. The closer you are to the end of 2 above the more control you have over your choices.

I hope this helps and all the best.
