Hi,
I am not from India and I am not in Canada yet, I am however a physio and I have many Indian colleagues here who have moved to Canada and many who are at various stages of the process, and I am also currently at the exam phase of the licensing process so I hope I can be of help.
1).To the best of my knowledge, the outcome of your credential evaluation with the Alliance depends largely on which institution you completed your training in India and the year of your graduation. Your best guide is to find out the outcome for anyone from your training college in your year of graduation who had completed the Alliance evaluation. In general, most people who graduated with a B.Sc Physio, B.Physio, B.PT etc should not have too many deficiencies to overcome. You may have to do some remedial courses to overcome the deficiency or demonstrate to your credential evaluator that you have acquired enough post training experience in clinical practice to make up for the deficiency in your training. If you need to take some courses, the Alliance now have different flexible options to help. This is done through a process called
PLAR - Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition. The Alliance will provide relevant information to help you should you need to go through this route. See more details here http://www.alliancept.org/pdfs/credential_faq_2010_eng.pdf
2). Physiotherapy assistant is largely an unregulated profession in most (If not all) provinces in Canada, you may very well apply for a physio assistant job from outside, but most employers in my opinion may prefer candidates who are already on the ground and have some level of knowledge of the system. I think completion of the credential evaluation may help to overcome this. Subject to conditions, some provinces e.g British Columbia may offer you a limited/temporary licence upon completion of your credential evaluation, others e.g Ontario and Alberta would issue temporary licence only upon completion of the 1st stage of the exam (i.e written component) but note that there are terms and conditions for this and the validity of such licences are very short.
Bottom line is, if you haven't started already, you need to start applying for your credential evaluation now while you are still back in India as it would save you a lot of time money and energy regardless of whether you intend to get a PT assistant job or go straight to a PT job when you land in Canada.
I hope this helps and all the best.
