just an update: it worked out fine. no questions were asked at the Delhi airport or port of entry in Canada. Minimum 6 months valid passport from the start of the travel dates worked out well.

Hi, here is what I found.
If you have a direct flight to India you can land on or before the expiry date on your passport.
If you have a transit then you need to have a minimum validity on passport. Depends on the country where you have transit. In my case it was Germany. I spoke with German Immigration authorities, they need a minimum of 3 months validity on passport to let you transit in their country even if you are not going to leave the transit area.
The airlines have a rule of minimum 6 months validity on your passport. you can travel if you take some proof with you like an email from the consulate or if it is mentioned on their website.
Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for your reply,
So, the thing is it is for my parents, and they are here in canada on supervisa and they are travelling back from calgary to india via Frankfort (layover) as well.
So, the question is india is there home country and they are indian Nationals, so even goin back to there home country will be a problem?
Did you already fly to india or cancelled the tickets ?
Because, there travel date is on dec 02/2024 and passport is expiring on jan 14/2025.

Did you read the answer above? "I spoke with German Immigration authorities, they need a minimum of 3 months validity on passport to let you transit in their country even if you are not going to leave the transit area."

Seems to address your parents' situation directly.
