Hello All,

I have got 452 points and hoping to get selected in couple of months with the last draw of 461 points.
My main concern was to know the process of My 2yr old child was was born in USA and has US passport which means he is US citizen.

Do we still need to apply for his PR as US/Canada is local for him?
I am trying to avoid any additional fees for him like Immigration , landing etc.

Any detailed information related to this would be highly appreciated.

Thanks,
Vishal

Very interesting question, thanks for raising. Unfortunately, yes, you will have to pay the fees if you wish your child to become a permanent resident of Canada. However, as a U.S. citizen, your child needn't become a permanent resident - there may be other ways to keep your child with you in Canada (but those visas will entail their own fees and bureaucratic paperwork). Honestly, I see no reason why you would want to avoid paying the PR app fees for your child. The CIC/visa/lawyer costs of keeping your child with you sans PR is probably the same or more. Also, in case you're not aware, your child's Canadian PR does not endanger or affect his/her US citizenship in any way. In fact, when the time comes, your child can choose to have dual citizenship! How cool is that?

All the best to you and your family.

1. Children of applicants less than 18 does not pay right of permanent resident fees and only pay CAD 150 for application fee ( instead of CAD 550 ) . You also have to pay associated fees for your child PR such as medical fees and you also need to show proof of funds that cover a family of three.

2. As your child is already an American citizen, he can not have a dual citizenship with Canada but he is entitled to be a permanent resident if your PR application is successful. If your child want to have Canadian citizenship , he will have to decide that and renounce US citizenship when he is old enough.

3. Good luck with 452, may be you can get ITA in the next couple of draws.

1. No, the child will not have to renounce his US citizenship, if he applies for Canadian citizenship in the future.

Only USA is local to your son. Canada is still a foreign country for him. Your son is considered in same way for Canadian PR as if he would be citizen of India or any other country. US citizens do not get preference for Canadian PR. Only if your child was Canadian citizen, then you would not need to apply for his PR and could save on fees. All US citizens get visa free travel to Canada as a visitor, so as citizens of many other countries like UK, Europe, Australia, NZ etc. For Canadian PR everyone is same. Later on, once you get PR for your son, he can get Canadian Citizenship and can hold dual nationalities (US & Canada). There are thousands of people with dual nationalities of Canada and USA.

Hi ,
I am also in same situation . I did submit my PR application with my US born kid . You need to get PR for them also .
Later switching to Canadian Citizenship or Retaining US citizenship is choice .
