Hi All,

I've been trying to go through the CIC website, but I've had no luck thus far. My husband is an American Citizen who is currently in process for his permanent residence. We believe we are in our final stages of the process, but today his father passed away. Unfortunately, I cannot find much information online about repercussions if he was to leave to fly back to L.A. for the funeral. We'd hate to screw up the process we've been in for over two years, but we also don't want to not attend the funeral.

He has his work permit and documents from CIC about his application being in process (we filed as spousal, living in canada), but will they let him back in the country if he leaves? Will it delay our process?

Any advice would be great. Unfortunately the funeral is set for Tuesday, so we don't really have any time to deal with CIC.

I would probably gather all the information you have, papers you've received back from CIC...any permits etc and contact the POE or CBSA where you'll be going through and tell them the situation, it is Friday now and you won't get any CIC reps on the phone until Monday, and even then, I can't imagine you'll get super far with that...just my opinion...sorry for the loss and hope it works out for you!!!

One of mine friends had same kind of situation in the past. Immigration call centre agent advised him, not to leave the country because he would face difficulty to enter back to Canada. If your permanent residence file is under process, you can leave the country but coming back is all upto the CBSA officer.
Sorry for the loss

If the application is processed at the out-land office then he can leave and come back as long as he has a valid work permit. But if your application is in process at the in-land office then you wish to travel for the funeral you can take along with all your Immigration document and there is possibilities that you will be allowed to return into Canada as the work permit is still valid and must be able to explain to the border agency just in-case they question you. It's worst giving it a shoot or call the CIC call center for more details. Goodluck.
