Hi all,

My boyfriend is a PR holder and I was taking a short term certification in Canada on a tourist visa. We are originally Pakistani citizens. We decided to get married and went ahead with a civil/court marriage. We also decided that we could apply for my PR sponsorship through the in-land route once our marriage certificate is received.

However, since our backgrounds are Islamic, our parents and close relatives will be flying in for a 'Nikkah ceremony'. The officiant at the mosque who will handle the nikkah is asking for a marriage license, even though we tried explaining that we have already submitted that document once we got civil married and started. For those who have a similar background, what exactly is the process to have a Nikkah ceremony in Ontario? Can it take place without a marriage license? Does it have to be somehow included in the spousal sponsorship application? Also, what would I need to update this status in Pakistan?

Thanks

You may find that the sponsorship may not go through without the having submit the Nikkah since your family and the general Islamic community would not consider you married. Are you living together as husband and wife currently? Were you living together before the wedding?
