Hi everyone,

I have a question and hopefully one of you can help to answer.

I'm being sponsored by my husband (holding a PR) and we just submitted our in-land application. My TRV expires on 29 Mar 2014 and my passport expires on 29 April 2014. I have to submit the application for my visit extension by 16 Nov 2013.

My question is:
If my embassy said I could get my new passport next week if I applied early in the week. does it matter if I extend my visit with a new passport? or should I apply the visit extension, then apply for new passport?

Thank you, my friend!! ;D

Why must you apply to extend your visit visa so early? (If it's valid until Mar 29, 2014).

Hi truemile,

I arrived in Canada on 16 June 2013 from Boston and from my understanding, I can only stay up to 6 mths and have to extend my stay, right? That validation of my multi-entry visa is only until 29 Mar 2013....

Hi all,

This is for future information for my fellow friends that are going to extend their stay in Canada and their passport are soon to expire.

I have spoken to my lawyer and he said that it's advisable to extend my passport before proceeding with the extension of stay. He also said that since I am being sponsored by my husband, it's possible to get 12 months extension with the new passport. And for the record, he also said the new passport will not affect the PR application at all and it's unnecessary to update CIC.

Hope this helps, my friends. Do check again with the lawyers when in doubt with your cases!

Cheers!

Thank you. It is very useful information, since I am almost in the same situation.

You should update CIC with your new passport, as your passport number will be on your COPR, Confirmation of Permanent Residence. You could face problems trying to land with a passport that has a totally different number than your COPR.

Also, because you applied inland, you should have submitted an Open Work Permit application along with the inland PR application. This would have given you status for the duration of the application, and allowed you to work after first stage approval.

I advise you to first extend your passport. Once you have your new passport, email a copy to the visa office. Then submit your OWP app. Explain that you were unaware that you could submit the OWP app and request that it be matched up with your inland PR app to be processed after stage 1 approval.

I find it very concerning that your lawyer didn't advise you of any of this.

You don't need to submit passport for TRV (visitor) extension--if you apply online. You will be sent a paper in the post showing the extension. In the meantime, try to get a new passport.

Hi canuck_in_uk,

I have thankfully been informed by my lawyer abt applying for my OPW with the in-land application. The Vegreville office received that package 18 Oct 2013 (just realized my typo on my initial post hehe), so I don't have letter from CIC that stated my application status. Gonna collect my new passport tomorrow and start my visa extension renewal ASAP. But thank you for the heads up regarding the explanation abt the COPR, I'll clarify it with my lawyer again since the one replying my e-mail was his assistant....

Ahh... Now it makes sense! I was wondering how I could track my next extension of stay if I didn't have to send my passport with the stay extension application. Thank you!
