Importing a vehicle from the USA

Hello,

I have a question regarding importing a vehicle into Canada from the US. My girlfriend came up to Canada last year in May. At that time we drove up here together in her vehicle and she was let in as a visitor, as well as her car. We have since gotten married and have applied for Permanent Residency from within Canada. Thus the issue comes up.

Her insurance company in the States is no longer allowing her to renew her insurance as she currently has a Canadian address, but the car has not actually been imported. We would like the import the vehicle, however as far as I can tell from reading up on the process of importing a vehicle into Canada, it is required that they are given 3 days notice before it comes into Canada and during those three days the car must reside in the US. As she is currently in the PR process, we do not want to risk her having to drive across the border and then not being able to return as that will mess up the whole PR process.

We understand that this is something we should have looked into sooner, but we didn't and now this is where it stands. Is there anything we can do that would allow us to import the vehicle so that we can continue using it in Canada, as at this time it would seem that we are SOL, and are even at risk of having our vehicle seized.

On a side note, I have considered calling the RIV to ask them questions, however I don't want that leading into us getting in trouble for not doing this all sooner.

Any assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

First decide what's more important: Car or Girlfriend! If it's a Girlfriend, leave your Car in a garage for a while and get a new/used one.

Many people in Canada have seasonal homes in the states. Perhaps, your GF can use one for renew her insurance and save the costs of importing the car to Canada?
