No, it's not required. Unless you have had problems in the past OR doesn't have a good understanding with English - most people just apply by themselves. CIC's website is fairly straightforward and if you have any questions, you can utilize the search function here to look for answers.

Also, if you want to know the advantages / disadvantages - you can find enough discussions by browsing through this forum.

That's a personal preference some people like to stay away from mess in other words they aren't no risk takers.

Adv.
- Lawyer it self is a big advantage
- Can take care of stuff if something goes wrong.
- Can take care of CIC queries if any.

Dis.
- Charges lot of money, and some people also believe that it is a waste of money as CEC application is straight forward
- You wont know many things about your application. Personal experience with friends who hired a lawyer
- Lawyer might delay preparing your file as he might have other clients too. Personal experience with friends who hired a lawyer
- Cant keep asking him questions regarding your application, or you have to email him for your question to be answered. Some lawyers charge you for answering your question that too per email. Personal experience with friends who hired a lawyer

P.S. If your application is straight forward and if you are a good learner I don't see any reason hiring a lawyer. If you go through any excel sheet you can see that around 70-80% people did application on their own.

Thanks for the response. I basically got the idea of approaching immigration lawyer / consultant because of insufficient documentation as regards the experience certificate. My employer would not provide an experience certificate as required by the CIC application.
This puts me in a fix, as I just have the salary letter, appointment letter copy. will this suffice ?
I happen to consult a lawyer and he confirmed that there are specific forms to be filled in such cases because none of the corporates would give exp. certificates.

I understand that everything is quite straight forward as all the details are available on the CIC website, but lack of proper documentation makes me think twice before venturing on my own.

what's your opinion about this ?

Best answer. I agree. I paid a law firm, just because I didn't want any complications. I've been in Canada since 2005 and spent lots of money here, the last few to make sure I get my PR is worth it. I've known people that speak and write English well and they were held up because of a misspelling or something stupid like that. Because by the time the error is fixed it's already been 6 months.

what's your opinion about this ?Get a legal advice of what should be done regarding missing Letter of reference. I know there are ways like get a letter from your client, including Cover Letter Etc. But I would not take such chances.

Also, Iam currently working in Toronto and my work permit will expire in November. In such a case, after I apply for CIC on my own, if there is any query after Nov... how to handle the same ? because I will be in India !!

I am not sure if you are aware of BOWP. If you don't want to go to India then you can apply for BOWP once you receive AOR. CIC is going to email you if they have any query. So you can easily figure out what they want from you.

I don't think lawyer can influence CIC if you are insufficient with document. Try to get reference letter from your employer as it is most important. If not collect all the proofs regarding your job role, pay slips, etc. If you are good enough to understand English, you can apply your own. This forum is more than a lawyer would help you for each and every doubt you have.

After November if you want to stay you can apply BOWP to continue to stay in Canada till the decision made on your application. Most of the communication from CIC would be through email. Hence it is not matter where you stay. I feel applying your own would make your application fast as there will not be delay for any communication.

Best of luck.
