So then my question remains, how much importance is Q8 for getting approval? I have lived in 3 countries, but the majority of time has been here in China. What is the purpose of this question and how does CIC use it to assess a sponsor and whether he or she can get approval?

Pretty sure it has to do with background. There are some tests to be met for being a sponsor within the meaning of the IRPA, after all. What precisely they do with this information, other than use it to formulate questions if your spouse needs an interview, I'm not sure.

Thanks.

I don't quite understand how it can relate to background? So what if someone has lived in other countries. Wouldn't background be more involved, i.e. what were you doing in those countries? If I simply put the country where I have lived and the dates, this information alone is pretty useless, unless CIC employ a team of analysts or people who check for records and such.

Like I said, what precisely they do with it, I don't know for sure. Someone from CIC called my husband and asked him about his information, to this day he's the only person I know this has happened to. They seemed interested in his time abroad, maybe because it included military service, I don't know.

As for why it matters for background, how does CIC know you don't have spouses littered all over the place from your previous travels you've never bothered to sponsor? And you'd be amazed what they can do with your name and DOB these days.

The number 1 rule I used to fill out these applications is to never lie and to never knowingly omit something because it can come back to bite you.

So if they ask for information, fill it in, and if you don't remember the exact details, say so. What they do with the application is their business. I don't know why they need that information and I don't care. Remember, applying to sponsor someone is not a right. You have to play by their rules, or you will get denied if they find out, which will cause more headaches down the road.

As I told you before, our case was as straightforward as you can get, but I still filled everything out to the T. My wife lived in China for a measly 6 months after the age of 18 and we still needed to get a Chinese police check, even though she already had one done when she immigrated to the US and has never been back and we could've submitted the old one, but they wanted a new, up to date one. It was a big pain to have to literally get someone to go to the police station in China and to get the thing done and notorized.

Isn't it THAT only the person being sponsored need to put the details of what country and where he had live more than six months since he/she was 18 years old and not the SPONSOR ?..

No. Check IMM5540 where it asks if you, the sponsor, have lived in any other countries. Note that this does not apply to holidays...even if they lasted more than a month.

The applicant must also provide personal history details...but this is not specific to having lived in other countries.

Ok.. I agree with the other guys here. Better to give what they're asking and explain on another sheet of paper that you cant remember all the details... They will accept your explanation but not your misrepresentation..
