IMM5490E - Do you receive financial support from your sponsor?

While filling the IMM5490E application for sponsoring my wife from India to come to Canada, I noticed that the last question asks: Do you receive financial support from your sponsor?

I gave my wife money in person before I left India to my resident country. But I don't have proof for this. I have not sent her any money because she lives with her parents. Is that okay or will the VO question why I did not send her any financial support? Should I send her money for the sake of answering yes, and showing proof?

Thanks for your reply. She actually doesn't work nor goes to school. She is sitting in her parents home so they are supporting her. Would that be considered as okay enough?

Thanks Mickey. What do you mean by cover letter? Should I attach a piece of paper and answer the question fully or do something else?

Yes excatly you attach a piece of paper and explain.
Also put the title as "FORM XXXX question no. YY" and have your name as the header of the letter.
Great, thanks so much! I would have the spouse's name on the top right? Since it is her application. Why my name? I am the sponsor.

I don't understand which letter you are referring to. Do I need to write her a letter indicating that I will not support her financially? Sorry I am confused.

No, don't do that.

For the question, Do you receive any financial support from your spouse?, your wife can answer 'yes' and explain that you gave her some money before you left India. Then she could add that you have not sent any more money because she lives with her parents and is being supported by them while she waits to go to Canada to be with you. That will be fine.

She could also answer 'no', since you only gave her money the one time. She should still attach an explanation stating that you gave her some money one time ... (as above).

The question is not a deal-breaker: the applicant can answer yes or no and still be accepted. In your case, I would answer 'yes' and attach an explanation (as above). If your wife attaches a separate sheet of paper to the form to answer any question more fully, she should put her name, her date of birth, the number of the form and the question number. I would also put the sponsor's name and date of birth - this is just to make sure the visa officer can find the paper if it gets misplaced.

Thanks so much for the tips! This form is for the sponsor's spouse so why would I have to write anything? I understand that she could write an explanation. But if I write the same explanation, wouldn't that overlap and repeat the same thing? Also, Does that mean that I would have to do this entire application from my perspective as well?

The applicant should write the explanation. The sponsor does not need to. This form is for the applicant only.

OR . . . you could just put "NO". Since we couldn't "prove" it, that's what we did. Again, not a 'deal-breaker'.
