I'm so confused...Please help me

Hi,

I have been in Canada for 1.5 years with study permit. Currently I have enrolled the certificate course in one college in Toronto. The program is 1 year and I'm going to start 2nd semester next week. The course will be ended in Jun and my study permit will be expired in Sep 2010. Honestly I don't like this program and think about not to continue. The problem is I am going to apply PR outland (Buffalo) in Mar. If I quit school now, I'm worried if I will be able to stay in Canada legally as I'm here with study permit. I realize that processing time in Buffalo is around 4-10 month so I have a chance that I won't get PR before my study permit expired. I don't want to do PR inland since it might take forever to get it and my husband and I might temporary move to another country for a year in 2011 for his study.

Does anyone know what I can do in this case? Or the best way is just to keep on studying another semester even I really don't like the program? I was thinking about changing the program but mostly the program will start in Sep and I can't just stay here doing nothing as I'm holding a study permit.

I believe you can stay doing nothing if you are holding a valid study permit. I don't know that for a fact so you should call CIC and ask. I know for somebody with a work permit, if they quit their job, they can still stay in Canada for as long as their work permit is valid, even if they are not working.

If they say that you can stay, you can find something else to do to avoid getting bored. Volunteer at a hospital or take shorter courses that interest you. You do not need any kind of study permit to take courses shorter than 6 months.

If they say you have to stay in your course, then tough it out. Maybe it will get better or at least you'll finish it and get your certificate.

Inland is that you are in Canada and your application is sent to Vegreville and processed completely in Canada. You are actually not advised to leave Canada while it is in process.

Outland is that you can be inside or outside Canada but your application is sent to Mississauga and after they are done with it, they will send it to the visa office responsible for the country of your nationality or residence and they will process it there.

Outland is usually faster but it depends on the country. With inland, if all goes well, you can have first stage approval and get an open work permit in 6-8 months. Some people get their PR with inland in as little as 10 months, others are waiting 18 months or more. Your problem with inland is that you are not advised to leave and also if it goes badly, you would be stuck in Canada unable to work for over a year while you wait to get an interview.
