I am a Canadian citizen and moved to Malawi, Africa. Met my husband in Malawi and I have been living with him, and he also supports me financially. We are now pregnant and I would like to deliver in Canada (due to better health care). I would like my husband to apply for a TRV so he can be present for the birth of our first child. We both have no intentions in staying/living in Canada. We just want to be in Canada from Nov 2012 - March 2013. My due date is Feb 2013.

So far we have included the following in his visa application package:

- trv application forms
- invitation letter from myself, my passport, my receipt that I applied for permanent residence in Malawi
- invitation from my brother (as we will be staying with him and my mother when in Canada), his bank statement, employment proof, Canadian passport
- letter from my mother, who came to Malawi for 3 weeks to celebrate our union, and her Malawi passport stamps
- my husband's bank statements (his own account and our joint account) showing sufficent funds
- my husband's construction company supporting documents, financial statemements, contracts etc.
- pay stubs for my husbands part time job and employment letter for parental leave
- pictures of our engagement ceremony
- pictures of the house we are building in Malawi, and receipts of the housing materials
- supporting documents of the (NGO) orphanage we started together, pictures of my husband with the kids in our orphanage project
- maternity receipts from doctor, doctor notes on pregnancy
- my Canadian savings account bank statement (with more funds to support our stay)

What are the chances of him getting a TRV? Should we include anything else?

Some embassies have a very hard time believing that spouses will not overstay if they get a TRV. I am not sure what else you can include.

However, one thing to look into is if you are still covered by health care in Canada and if not how you are going to pay the cost of the delivery. You generally must be resident for at least 6 months a year in order to keep your health care. Not that this has much to do with the TRV application but if it turns out that you are going to pay it out of pocket and you show arrangements to do that, it could strengthen your TRV application that you really are not planning on staying.

If embassies have a hard time believing that spouses will not overstay with a TRV, what would be another option? What other visa could he apply for?

If he were refused a TRV, the only other option would be a TRP, a special permit sometimes given to people on humane and compassionate grounds but I do not know if they would consider your need to go to Canada to have your baby and his need to come along to be strong enough grounds for that. If he is still refused, he simply will not be going to Canada.
