I'm Jamaican with a Masters, do i need the IELTS?

Good day friends,

I have completed my application and sent all my required documents to the CIO in Sydney on July 25th 2010. This falls under the new rules for the Federal Skilled Worker application. The issue i'm having is that i have GCE and CXC in Secondary Level English, i completed my Bachelors of Science and MBA in English with specific English courses and i have been employed for over 30years in Jamaica where my native language is English.

1. Will i be penalized for not submitting IELTS results along with my application?
2. Will i lose my opportunity to re-apply?
3. Will i lose the application fee already paid?

Your help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Yes you will be penalized because since 26th June all applicants required to submit IELTS to CIO and it is for everyone even those whose first language is English so you need to sit IELTS.
2. Will i lose my opportunity to re-apply?
Most probably they will return your application and will ask you to submit again and when you submit again if NOC is full then you will have to wait until July 2011.
3. Will i lose the application fee already paid?
No, they will return the application with the fee so you wont loose your money.Your help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

>>> the native language of Jamaica is Jamaican and NOT english. You cant be called to come from native english speaking country. English is second language in Jamaica. You may have studied english ## number of years, spoken in english at home or office all long, studied some course ( diploma / degree) at Oxford ( London) but you are not exempted from being tested for language proficiency in English. If you had studied at elementry and secondary school in a native english speking country like Canada, England, Australia, USA, NZ then it was exempted for you.

1. Will i be penalized for not submitting IELTS results along with my application? >>> they will send back your application. You will be one lucky Caribbean if it is not sent back. Then you can have shandy.

2. Will i lose my opportunity to re-apply? > you can reapply if your NOC is in occupation list
3. Will i lose the application fee already paid?>>> Your draft / credit card will not be encashed. Only returned as it is.

Explorer101 - You are thinking of Jamaican Patois. But the official language of Jamaica is only English. Jamaicans did not have to show proof of English for UK immigration (at least they didn't in the old rule, I am not sure about the new UK rules). They are English speaking because Jamaican Patois is not a language. By the way, I also read that with the new rules everyone including those from England, Australia, USA and NZ are required to do the IELTS.

Marie D - Even those who are from native English speaking countries like US, UK, Jamaica, etc have to do the IELTS now from June 26th.

BTW, you should wait to confirm that even those from English speaking countries have to do the IELTS now. I am not 100% sure of the rules because I am part of the old applications.

The easiest would also be to check CIC website under FSW.

The rules can also be found by searching for "OP6 CIC" on google and you should come across a pdf file.

'the native language of Jamaica is Jamaican and NOT english. You cant be called to come from native english speaking country. English is second language in Jamaica'

This was funny Explorer....English is our native language. ;D
Second language is patois ;D

For old applicants, it was acceptable to send a letter declaring that you live in a English speaking country, etc.

I think with the new rules, everyone is expected to submit the IELTS whether you are from an English speaking country or not.

You can double check on the website to be certain.

I hope you reapplied and already did the IELTS. I know the test dates are filled up quite quickly in Ja. I actually went to Canada to do my test. The test isnt that bad and since you have a Masters, you should easily score in the High range. You will get back your money if your application is not considered under the pre June 26, 2010 lot.
