hi i have a ten year expired permanent residency in the united states ive been out of the country for 3 years and i have to renounce my permanent residency to the us (canadian citizen) if i renounce my permanent residency to the united states do i have to obtain a visa to visit the united states for travel or can i get into the country (US) without a visa as canadian residents have the right

it's actually a tricky question.

technically you should be able to enter the US for 6-months visa-free with your Canadian passport.

However, it is known that the USA "red flags" people who have renounced US citizenship and green card. They will sometimes give such people hassles who try to visit the US. But this is mostly true for ex-citizens, not sure how much they hassle ex-GC holders.

Anecdotal evidence, but my ex-husband and former in-laws are all former GC-holders and don't have any issues going in and out of the US, nor any questions asked about their former status (they all lost it for non-residency). Sometimes ex-husband would be asked about visiting Iran (he was born there but never visited the country as a teen or adult), but that's all he'd have some questions asked about, never about his former US status.

1. You may not have to renounce your GC just because you've been out of the US but it depends why and what you've been doing (e.g working for the US government), whether you applied for a re-entry permit, if you filed taxes etc as some of the things the Immigration Judge will consider if you want to take your chance at court.

2. If you do end up losing/relinquishing the GC then admission thereafter is that like for any other non immigrant. Canadians typically have a smooth entry but it all depends who (CBP agent) you find on the day, what your reason for entry is and what ties you have to Canada.
