Mate, there is an entire forum section dedicated to this.

Read up on it here:

Definitely needs preparation.

I didn't do much preparation for it, just get yourself some tests, practise a bit before the real one.
The general one is easier than the academic, I didn't take any class, but if you are not confident, classes may help you.
Practise yourself on some IELTS textbooks, mostly focus on the recent publications.
I got 8 on my IELTS, listening 8, reading 8.5, writing 7, speaking 7.5.
Good luck for you test !

As with any other exam, practice well. First give a practice test in exam conditions (within time limit and no prolonged breaks), evaluate where you stand, then decide future course of action. Practice will definitely help you. There are ielts prep books by British council/idp, these are similar to actual exam. Your target should be 8777 in LRWS.

Once you register for the test, the practice tests and CDs shall be mailed to you either by British Council or IDP depending on with whom you have booked your test.

I registered for IELTS on 12.03.16 and took part in the exam on 19.0316. Before registration I had vague idea on how the question will be. I solved 3 books which helped me a lot. Barron's IELTS practice exams, McGraw-Hill IELTS practice exams and IELTS 10. The Barron's book was more concise than the Cambridge. I also went through the book called "Writing for Visuals" by Gabi Duigu.

there are a lot of sample tests here
http://www.ielts-mentor.com/

i believe the test is not truly an English test, its also to some extent trick test :) ...so more samples you do the more you understand what you are doing wrong ( the score can change drastically, with sample tests...especially for listening and reading test. You cant overnight improve your speaking and/or writing skills. But for writing understand the structure expectations by looking at content on youtube or sites like engvid.com or search for liz ielts and get some tips can help you improve your score)

if you are a heavy english user on day to day basis ( like work or you live in an english speaking country)...then the link above and couple of hours every day for 2-3 weeks is enough to get a decent score

all the best
