If you want to immigrate as a skilled worker and would like to work in Canada, then you need to appear for IELTS - General module. Academic module is meant for those interested in enrolling for a course like MS or MBA in Canada.
To obtain a good score above 400 CRS points, you need to achieve CLB 9 equivalent scores in IELTS i.e L-8,R-7,W-7,S-7
If you obtain the above minimum scores, then you would be able to achieve a good score above 400 CRS points.
Your spouse can also apply for ECA and appear for IELTS, so that you obtain points for your spouse as well.

You will have to take General Training. You can chose to do IELTS either from British Council or IDP. If you are looking for earlier dates, you might as well go with IDP as British Council slots get filled up upto 3 months in advance (IELTS is jointly owned by Cambridge, Britsih Council and IDP. So, there is no difference between British Council IELTS and IDP IELTS. These two entities supervise IELTS tests in many countries. In some countries it is British Council while it is IDP in others and sometimes they can found supervising tests in the same country on the same dates but different venues. I have appeared for both, I do not find any difference between the two and both the times, I got overall 8.)

The minimum score that you need to get for migration to Canada is 6.0 in each band (LRWS) which is CLB 7.

IELTS plays a very important role in boosting your CRS score. Ideally getting CLB 9 in IELTS (LRWS 8777) will give you the best points, You can try different values in the calculators here and see for yourself how much of a difference IELTS makes to your CRS score.

All the best!

You can do both, generally general is easier, however, i saw few people who scored higher (for some reason) while doing academic.

No, for Express Entry Academic will not be accepted. It has to be General only. Please refer to this link http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/skilled/language-testing.asp, it says the following

IELTS has two options for the reading and writing tests: “General Training” and “Academic.” You must take the “General Training” option.

Only General Training Test format is accepted for EE. Academic shall lead to the refusal of the application after AOR. This is a very clear instruction, we can do it right first thing.
