  1. Passage excerpt: Being a buddy is voluntary. There is no “requirement” to provide assistance beyond the help outlined above. However, we hope that the buddy and new students will enjoy each other’s company and continue to meet each other.
True / False / Not Given

Question: Buddies will be paid a small allowance.

I am anxiously waiting to read responses.
I think is NOT GIVEN.
There is no information about "be paid".
Even though there is "voluntary", no explanation is given.

Let us know.

Ok, now this is a question to me is very misleading and I disagree with your choice. Funny thing is , it's the correct answer according to Ielts practice website I got it from. My choice, just like @itsme22 choice was False.
Here's what I know what voluntary means.

adjective:-
done, given, or acting of one's own free will.
"we are funded by voluntary contributions"
synonyms: optional, discretionary, at one's discretion, elective, non-compulsory, non-mandatory, not required, open, open to choice, volitional, up to the individual;
working, done, or maintained without payment.
"a voluntary helper"
synonyms: unpaid, nonsalaried, without pay, without payment, free of charge, without charge, for nothing, for free.
So please tell me how that can be Not Given just because "paid " is not in the passage? I totally disagree. That should be False for the answer.

Is it correct?

Idk, maybe because "voluntary" doesn't specify what is "voluntary" (time? paid? Work?

However, "voluntary" could be refered about everything.

Look at these examples I have found:

"industry is implementing a voluntary emissions reduction programme"

"Karyn leads after-school workshops that studentsattend on a voluntary basis."

"Member States should be encouraged to give preference to voluntary return."

Voluntary doesn't specify something about money.

"Karyn leads after-school workshops that studentsattend on a voluntary basis." ( could be reference to time)

"Member States should be encouraged to give preference to voluntary return." (could be interpreted as a open to choice)
Voluntary doesn't specify something about money.
I get that and valid points, but as I said before I disagree and the question can be misleading.

I would have said yes to this.
1. The ship failed to respond to the Titanic's eight distress rockets ( attempts were made to communicate )
2. did not wake up their radio operator to listen for a distress call ( if the officers woke the radio operator, they would have been aware of the situation.
generally, they say that if some part is not given in the text you should not assume anything in the question it is mentioned "would have brought his ship to the rescue". This part is not mentioned anywhere hence the doubt...

Hmmm. The practice website answer module was Not Given, but I fail to see the logic there.
the key point to true false not given is "do not assume" ... if nothing about being paid is given then it is not given. Voluntary means one's own free will...... it is not compulsory that if your work is voluntary you will not be paid.

So that's the key? As stated synonyms to voluntary are unpaid etc...
First time I am doing ielts. According to what you are saying, if allowance, or time, or paid, or something specific is not actually stated in a paragraph, we can't assume or interpret the meaning of a word? I have done celpip twice and I got 12 at both grading in reading, but always fall short in writing lol . I appreciate the feedback and would pay attention to questions like that in the future.

But one thing techgirl, with the question you posted page 1, I interpreted , I assumed and that's why I chose True.
These are really great discussions and let's find some more. :)

As I said voluntary does not mean unpaid it means out of your own will. Yes, it mostly is unpaid but It is not mandatory that if your volunteering it will most definitely be unpaid- you may or may not get an allowance.

If say for example the word "allowance" or commission was written in the passage then your answer would have been correct. Since nothing about the money being paid or not is given the answer is not given.

I got 8 in reading last time but trust me ... that does not mean I am good at it.. I did work hard last time.. and i believe i will have to do the same this time as well ! :)

I am doing General October 27th.
Listening. I am good (but can't be complacent, always need to practice)
Reading . Good( but always need to practice , especially with those true, false and not given questions)
Speaking (Good)
Writing ( This is where I have to practice and focus on the most)
Any pointers on writing?
In writing, try using some tough words(vocabulary) correctly in the essay like - scourge, contradictory, plethora, obdurate, vital, essential, etc etc
don't throw the new vocabs anywhere .. try using them by practicing essays first.

secondly, what i found was if your ideas are well arranged it helps you score more . for example :-

1st para - Always paraphrase in the first line and then in the second line write your opinion briefly like what is the essay going to be about.

2nd para- Write a topic sentence ( This would depend on the type of essay). Then in the next line explain this topic sentence.
In the third and 4th line give an example and explain.

3rd para- Write a topic sentence (2nd opinion or disadvantage).
Then in the next line explain this topic sentence.
In the third and 4th line give an example and explain.

4th para - Give a brief summary of your opinion and the last line which explains your point.

Use a lot of linking words in between these paragraphs and concentrate more on essay..... This is what I did the last time .... maybe I am wrong.. please correct me if I am. But according to my analysis, the key is to not write too much in each paragraph and stick to the above structure and use a good range of vocab and you will be good to go.

Yeah, but case in point to the question you have posted. You took that approach, and the answer wasn't what you thought it was. This is the reason, that some of these questions can be misleading.
