Dear Team,

Is it optional or mandatory for my spouse to attend IELTS Exam ( we are trying for Express Entry)?
If mandatory, is there a minimum score he should achieve? Is there any pass mark band?

Please help.

Hello,

I think it is mandatory for your spouse (I am not 100% sure... let's wait for more opinions).

I applied as a accompanying spouse and I took it, and it gave us +12 points.

I read that the minimum score is 7 (level C1).

Sorry I can't help you more! Good luck!

IELTS is not mandatory for your spouse.

However, you get points for this, so it's absolutely worth taking the exam. You get 5 points for the FSW calculation (minimum required 67/100), which is 5%, which can be a significant amount. If you're confident you can get 67 points without the 5 points from his IELTS, you can skip it. You only need a CLB 4 to get the 5 points, it's easy.

BUT if you skip it, the next step is to get the CRS score when you enter the EE pool. Here's where you will miss out on a large number of points if you don't both max out your IELTS.

Your spouse can get you a maximum of

10 points for education (Master's degree and above)
20 points for language (CLB 10 and above)
10 point for Canadian work ex (5 years)

So it's the difference between a 400 and a 440 on your CRS score. The work ex is unlikely, unless you're already in Canada, so you're likely looking at a maximum of 30 points added to whatever you score, if he can max out his IELTS and has a Masters.

You can go read about it here

Hi! I have a question and was hoping you can help! I have the same situation here, my spouse and I are applying for express entry. I am the main applicant and she is the secondary applicant. She did the ielts and got terrible scores (2 bands below 5 and 2 bands above 5) but we noticed that our crs score increased by 5 points (464 to 469). My questions are:
-can she apply with me for express entry even if she didn't do well in the ielts? Or should I apply alone and add her to my application when she has a good ielts score? My last question is: it doesn't seem logical that our score increased by 5 even though she did a terrible job in the ielts, is the crs calculator accurate? Thanks!

1. Yes, you can add her with low scores or no scores. IRCC isn't judging you or her - it's a mathematical calculation, no one is going to deny you PR if your spouse doesn't speak English (as long as you have enough points to qualify, of course). You can add her now, get the extra five points, and then update her scores if she takes the test again.

2. Each element of the IELTS (speaking reading writing listening) contributes to the score. So yes, it is possible that she got a score like 0, 0, 7, 7 and your scores will increase. The calculator (assume you're talking about the official IRCC one) is quite accurate.
