I heard that there are 2 IELTS tests: The academic one and the general one. Which one should I take to immigrate to Canada?

Thank you.

How can one determine the points for English Language? For eg, if one selects high proficiency on the simplified application, but upon taking IELTS after submitting the simplified application, result indicates moderate proficienty. What will happen in that case?

If you need the points, you will have to practice your English and try the test again before you submit your results. When they ask for the data and you provide them with moderate level, they will give you points for moderate level.

Moderate will get us 8 points that will make our total score 66. Any advice for increasing one point?

You can take the test now to know how many points to give yourself. Then there is no doubt. If you score too low, you will have to study and take it again.

According to http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/faq/immigrate/skilled/skilled-faq14.asp if you take the IELTS within one year of submitting simplified application, the results remain valid.

Thanks once again Leon! Your advice has been a great help to me!

I will take IELTS now and if i get high in any of the bands, i will apply under FSW.

I am trying to get something clearer. If test taken within 1 year of submitting form is accepted, then how would you factor in the grades when form was being commpleted? For instance, I decide to submit my form this november to take the test next April (which is within 1yr), what would I enter in the form this november since test is still in the future? Are arbitrary grades accepted even future or actual grades mismatch?

Good point. Clearly when they established the rules the process was not supposed to take years. So you could take the test and accurately fill in the application form.

My understanding is that the way it works now, what you write in the application form is simply your own evaluation of your language skills. One suggestion is that you go to an english/french language training centre and ask for a (sometimes free) evaluation.

But what you need, if you are not taking the test before applying, is to make an honest assessment of your abilities. Eg., if you are applying with 67 points, assuming you speak "moderate english", and later the test reveals you are at the "basic english" level, then you're in trouble.

Personally, I am not planning to take the ielts. I'll claim high proficiency in english (first official language) based on the facts that I took a 4 month ESL course in Canada, then a master's degree (meaning I wrote a report and presented the results of my reseach in english), also in Canada, that I won a prize for "best oral presentation" at a conference, and finally, that I use english on a regular basis at the workplace.

Now, for French... I'll probably take the TEF. Even though I live in France, I don't have enough evidence to make a strong case. But like I said, this is not something that worries me too much, because I don't need those points. (even if I only get "moderate proficiency" in english and "basic proficiency" in french, I still score 69 points)

(but wait for the opinion of someone more knowledgeable...)

Does within one year of submitting simplified application necessarily mean within one year after it or could it be before it? From the way they word it, that doesn't seem clear to me. To me it makes more sense to take the IELTS before you fill out the forms so you can know for sure how many points you have. Ask the embassy to make sure. Maybe it is absolutely fine to take IELTS before you apply and it will still remain valid when they ask for your documents. It's not like your English deteriorates very quickly if you already know it.

This is what i thought that IELTS could be taken within one year before submitting the application. Otherwise no one would be able to determine points for sure.

Can anybody verify that IELTS taken before one year of submitting simplified application will be acceptable?
