IEC Working Holiday Visa

Hello all,

This was mentioned in another thread but I thought it deserved it's own one; why is it possible that I am an excellent candidate for Permanent Residence but not for a Working Holiday visa according to the questionnaire?

Apparently a few years ago, having affiliations with companies and colleges was not such a bottleneck for this program. I even tried filling in the questionnaire by putting in that I actually had a job offer (I don't) and I still wasn't eligible. I've never applied for IEC WH before.

Thing is, I have the equivalent of over $30 000 Canadian, a PhD, UK passport, 30 years old (so just made it), no dependents, 2 years teaching experience and want to teach over there. I'm almost 3 months into my PR application and want a back up application just in case, if I can.

Has it just become so niche now or did this happen a while ago?

Hi,

There are much less requirements to apply for a Working Holiday Visa than for PR as long as you are from an eligible country.

If you have a UK passport, I am assuming you have British citizenship. You don't need a degree, or professional experience to apply.

Assume you selected British citizen for passport territory and not uk and colonies. Also answered no to 3rd part assistance. Chances of getting a UK IEC now are getting less as time goes on anyway.

I just tried it answering from what you have posted, there is a notice on the cover page that states if you don't answer British Citizen (not United Kingdom) in the first couple of questions, you will be ineligible. That might be your issue.

I went through the questionnaire and answered:

IEC Visa
Temp - more than six months
British Citizen
Scotland as the residence
30 years old
No to the jobs and placements

That profile comes up eligible.

The thing is, in the passport section, it only allows you to enter UK & Colonies and not Britain.

I'm born and raised in Scotland, so it is a little confusing when to say UK and when to say British...

The passport section definitely has British Citizen as an option and that is the one that you need to choose.

It's at the upper part of the page where the drop down menu gives only UK and colonies.

At the lower part, there is also a section that you can put British Citizen for passport.

EDIT: more specifically "country/territory of issue" only lets you put in UK. Whereas country/territory of citizenship lets you put in British citizen which I did.

I am indeed. I have another question though; ideally I'd want to be in Canada permanently. I checked through the questionnaire that I am eligible to stay for up to 2 years or open ended. But does that mean the open ended WHV will be more difficult to get accepted?

There is no 'open ended' work permit - not sure what option is gave you?

I'd go the IEC and then wait for your PR to be processed. In terms of requirements & processing time, IEC is the most straightforward by far.

Hmmm.. There's no such thing as an open ended WHV. As a Brit, it's two years max. I'm not sure why you are seeing the option.

In case no one has mentioned it... Are you familiar with the popularity of the WHV program - espeically for UK passport holders? Unfortunately it is way oversubscribed (i.e. far more applicants than openings available) - so getting a spot comes down to sheer luck in the draw. In previous years, it was first come first serve with 2-3 application windows each year. Last year, the application cap for each window was reached in less than 15 minutes. The upside with the random draw approached introduced this year is that everyone has the same chance of being selected. The downside is that it takes away the possibility of getting an advantage and snagging a spot by being very fast. Good luck!

I've made a complete mess of this.

The Come to Canada tool for IEC asked how long I wanted to stay in Canada. The options for me were

1. Less than 6 months
2. More than 6 months
3. Permanently.

As a British Citizen, should I only select "more than 6 months" or can I choose permanently? It says that British Citizens are allowed up to 24 months and yet the questionnaire deemed me eligible for a permanent WHV (and gave me a code). I'm really confused by this.

I had deleted my preliminary IEC submission (no fees paid yet or anything uploaded) because I wanted to resubmit it as an option 3 instead of option 2. The problem is MyCIC will now not let me resubmit an IEC application (the button is gone). And now I'm wondering if I should've just stuck with option 2 all along.

Move over to the Foreign Worker section of the forum. This is where you should be posting questions related to IEC. If you look through the historical threads there - you will find some posts on resubmitting profiles, issues people have had, and how they have resolved them.
