And just because it's not complicated enough: I will travel outside Canada and come back before the current Work Permit will be expired, but after having applied for the Visitor Visa and hopefully after having applied for the new Work Permit. If so, and if that visa was multiple entry (not single entry) then you can re-enter Canada using the same visa (If it was single, then it is already used and expired).
and once you re-enter Canada this way, sure you can work using your current work permit till its expiry date.
As a matter of fact, people on implied status (which will not be your case) may get problems if they travel and re-enter Canada during the implied status period and practically have to stay in Canada till receiving the new work permit.
