IEC to CEC?

Hi Guys,

I just recently applied for a working holiday visa but I just wanted to ask if you can go from an IEC visa to a CEC? (I assume that employers in Canada won’t just offer you temporary roles and that you can apply for permanent ones? Which I could then work for 12 months to apply for the CEC in skilled jobs A/B/O which mine would be skill level B).

Also, would it be possible to take my golden retriever with me on an IEC visa? Because, I'm obviously aiming for PR so I'm not leaving him in the UK!

I apologise if the info I'm giving is incorrect - I'm still trying to do some research so don't judge my lack of knowledge :p

Thanks! :)

p.s. I did the eligibility checker for express entry and it says I'm eligible but it didn't ask for much education, jobs background so is there a chance I could still get refused once I create my profile?

You can - but there are a few complications. First of all, you need at least one year of full time pad work experience in Canada in a skilled occupation to apply. If you have a one year IEC - this means you would literally need to start that job day one of arriving in Canada and work until the last day of your IEC before you will be able to apply. If you have a job arranged before you come to Canada this may be possible. Otherwise you need to find a way to extend your work permit either through applying for another IEC (if your country allows this) or by having your employer obtain an approved LMIA so that you can apply for a closed work permit (the LMIA process is long and expensive and many employers aren't willing to go through it). Secondly, just because you qualify to apply for CEC doens't mean you will be selected. Yous should calculate your points under Express Entry to assess your chances of being selected. As of now, only those with 450 or more point have been selected. Over the last several months, only those with more than 480 points have been selected. Unfortunately it's really impossible for any of us to say if this will go up, down or stay the same in the future.

Your concern is not that your profile may be refused - it's that you'll submit a profile that doesn't have enough points to be selected out of the application pool.

Thank you very much for replying! Luckily in England we get 2 years under IEC so lets say it takes me 1 month to find a job - can I apply for CEC from Canada (after working there for 12 months in a skilled occupation) or would I have to go back to England first then apply? Is there a only a set quota as well for CEC?

I will assess my points for Express entry - thank you very much for your help! :)

Yes, you can bring your pup - even on a temporary work permit.

That's good to know! Do you also know how long the process is for CEC? My worry is applying for it in Canada but it taking so long that I have to fly back with my dog if my work visa expires until it gets approved

Well, the sooner you qualify, the sooner you can apply, and if you apply before your old work permit expires, then you will be eligible for what is called a "bridging open work permit" - intended to allow people to continue working during processing. In real life, it often doesn't work out that neatly and having to leave is always a possibility, but if you stay on top of things, you can usually find a way to stay...

I wouldn't want to make any dog fly more often than is absolutely necessary, so it's good you appreciate the challenges.

Oh, but to answer your question - there's no clear-cut answer to how long it takes. IRCC's goal is to process 80% of EE applications within 6 months, from the time a complete application is accepted into processing. But there's a lot of steps that preceed that... And often because of small errors, people have to submit more than once. And you could always be one of the 20% whose application is NOT processed in 6 months. If you can succeed with the BOWP, however, you can stay until the end..

That's good to know! I was worried it would take a lot longer but if there's roughly an 80% chance it could be processed within 6 months then I'm more than happy to take that chance!

Just one more question - to qualify under CEC does your employer need a LMIA? Or when I go over will jobs under my skill level (level B) still hire me as they are not needing to sponsor me and I'm already living there?

:)

of course just keep in mind renting somewhere with a dog might be a challenge to find somewhere that is pet friendly plus of course who looks after when at work given a retriever probably needs a lot of exercise. Plus shipping costs and any vet fees for any pre travel jabs.

No LMIA is required. However being selected under CEC depends on the number of points you have (just qualifying and applying doesn't guarantee you will actually be selected). Historically, only those with 450 or more Express Entry points have been selected. Recently, only those with more than 480 points.

Thanks so much for your help! I don't have 450 points but hopefully I will get a job offer (which is 600 points I believe) which will give me enough points - or am I completely wrong?

Will do - I'm going to get some quotes off some pet travel companies so I can have a better idea on costs :)

Is the UK rabies free? A quick google search suggests yes, but there was an asterisk associated with it. If it is still considered rabies free, then bringing your dog with you is relatively straight forward. It's travelling the other way (from rabies to rabies free) that poses a real hassle (we previously took our lab from Canada to Australia, and back).

As for the job offer, you/your employer would also need an approved LMIA for you to be eligible for the 600 points.
