IEC Changes for 2015 ?

Hi guys,

So I'm currently in NZ but will be relocating to Canada next year (somewhere in Alberta).

I've gotten my Letter of Introduction and am now just applying for jobs in hopes I can secure one before I land.

So recently I've heard rumors from my friends over there that there will be changes to the IEC program in 2015. Notably that the IEC-NZ-Canada program will have a longer visa period ? (2 years or so).

Have you guys also heard of this rumor ?

When I went to the IEC websites, they have a notice saying "The 2015 IEC program will NOT open before January 2015, please refrain from asking the IEC team as they won't know anything till it's release".
Does it usually open in January for most countries ? Could this mean that they're preparing for some changes ??

Thanks for reading ! :)

This isn't a rumour - Steven Harper and John Key agreed to this when Stephen Harper visited NZ this month.
I can't post the link but it's a Canadian Govt press release - just google Stephen Harper and NZ IEC. I don't know when this will happen though....

It'd be good if the changed it so you could apply more than once too!

We are waiting on a LMIA because we already used our one year visa

I hope they do manage to change it in time and let it apply retrospectively! Hopefully it won't just be for new IEC visas going forward! Fingers crossed!

Yeah I found the official press release a few hours ago.

The thing is, I've been issued my Letter of Introduction. Does that mean I've already participated and can't do it again ? Hopefully not, otherwise it isn't fair that the people after me will get 2 years and I only get 1.

Right now I'm debating whether to fly there before or after the official rule is put into place. The IEC website states "IEC wont' be open until after Jan 2015" ...so I don't even have a date :( But I really want to apply for jobs from here.

Katie, are you a kiwi over there ? What are your thoughts of Canada so far? I am most likely going to Calgary as it's the best chance I"ll get of getting a job in IT (Web development .NET)

Man I hope I can get grandfathered in lol.

Hi Kiwisteph, thanks for replying. Can I ask a few more questions ?

How was your year there and what city were you based in ? What field is your employer in and is it a small/medium/big company ?
How hard was it convincing them to go through the LMIA for you ? I have been hearing that with how hard the LMIA criteria is (adverts for 4 weeks + $1000 + paperwork), alot of companies are really hesitant on going through it.

Also, how long did it take for you to find this job or your 1st job in canada ? Did you start from home ?

Hi Adam,

Just I'm living in Waterloo (just west of Toronto) and love it. My husband got a job here (he's a Canadian/Kiwi) so I followed him here. It's great - very similar to NZ in a lot of ways (except the weather! Currently -8 (with a windchill -14) Calgary will be much colder but you get used to it and they have all the gear here to make sure you don't get cold!). I really recommend getting Bogs - they keep your feet warm down to -40!

When are you planning to arrive in Canada?

Thanks for the reply Kate.

I'm Michael haha. I'm not sure where I put Adam. Must be one of those days for me. Been a long and stressful week.

I'm planning to go sometimes in January. People are saying don't because of the winter. But I love the winter and like you say, you adjusts. But seriously it's 25C in Auckland and i'm hottttt.

I've been stressed because I've been worried that I can't secure a job before I arrive there. I know it's supposed to be an awesome experience but I am someone who likes to plan in advance. I'm currently working in web development (microsoft .net technologies) here in Auckland , but I'll probably have to start at the very bottom with hospitality jobs first to get a canadian exp, then try and network my way to a small/medium company.
Hence why I chose Calgary I guess. Besides, I've been told the people there are so friendly and welcoming. What's your take on canadians so far :D :D

My current plan right now is: the next few days I'm going to fire off as many resumes and cover letter as I can to job postings (monster, indeed eluta etc..) and whether or not I get a skype interview or an offer...I'm going to go to Calgary from here on 17th January at the latest.
I"ll have to look at Kijiji soon too to look at room for rent. I'm looking to rent with roommates. Don't wanna live alone, so hopefully that'll help my situation.

I'm 23, single and dont' have alot of baggage. Just my bank account here + clothes + my brain.

I've got a question regarding tickets and insurance. It's abit confusing: Do I have to buy a return ticket from Auck - Calgary - Auck ?? And does it ahve to be exactly a year ? I heard that the officer won't issue a work permit longer than the ticket/health insurance duration. So say my return tickets or health insurance is only for 6 months then the wp is 6 months too ?
As for a health insurance, should I get one from NZ ? if yes, can you recommend a place ? how did you apply for yours ?

THanks so much for reading btw. I'm just abit stressed, that's why I'm asking alot of questions. I want to stay in canada for a while (legally of course). So I'm planning all the possible ways.

Hiya Mike

Only just saw this sorry, and wrote a big reply then my phone crashed - typical!

We were based in Ottawa after travelling the west and my husband got work straight away in construction I struggled a bit finding accounting work mainly because I think of the short term 1 year visa and Ottawa is quite bilingual. A lot of office jobs needed french basics which I didn't have, also couldn't apply for. The govt jobs as I wasn't a citizen. I could have tried harder but I took the chance to have a nice break from accounting though and did odd jobs like working in a Halloween store haha! The pay cut was an adjustment but I just enjoyed not working as hard. It was a nice size place and we met some awesome people but work wise the bigger western cities or Toronto might have been easier. It was 2011 so the GFC didn't help the job search much either. Being close to Montreal was fabulous experience :)

We did apply for ski jobs in Alberta from over there and that was easy process, I got an offer for payroll office job but hubby didn't so we stayed in Ottawa as he was on better money than what they offered. Didn't use IEP or anyone before we left. Was pretty easy to get bank account and SIN number ourselves once we got there, maybe not being straight out of school we didn't need as much help so didn't see the value in paying their fees.

I think you'll be fine in finding work in your field in calgary, once you prove you're a good worker I think a lot of Canadian employers like the kiwi work ethic so you'll find they might consider a LMIA. - start early though as it takes months and I don't think Iec visa give you implied status so you would have to stop working when it expires until you got a LMIA decision.

hubby's old boss (good friends now) moved to calgary from Ottawa and is flat out and that's why he's wanting to employ him again as he's a good worker and reliable and he can't get anyone over there to suit. He also told me there is an accountant shortage so won't be as hard for me this time (fingers crossed). Last time I looked 200 jobs for accts advertised on job bank!

Hopefully you'll get the two year visa and if you can get a job in your field for one year (NOC code A or B) you can try to go through canadian experience class for PR while your 2 year visa is still current and maybe not need a LMIA. Assuming you want to stay of course :)
Hard to know how the changes in Jan for PR express entry and IEC will impact everything.
Unfortunately we were short of the 1 year experience coz of travel and job start times etc, be hard to get 12 month requirement on the 1 year visa unless you started a job on day 1 of your visa.

We've got our fingers crossed for a result on our LMIA soon just want to go back so much! We moved back to Cairns from Canada as we had been in oz before canada but have been back in Nz for the last year so keen to get out again lol!

Have you done any labour/building construction work at all? Our friend/boss in Calgary is always looking for helpers/labourers so could at least be a contact to get started or just to ask questions in the beginning, they might know someone with a room to rent if you want me to ask :)
Apparently the chinook winds warm the place a little in winter so it's not so bad and who doesn't want to be near the mountains and Banff, lake Louise etc.

We didn't have return tickets, just got a one way bus ticket since we could book that a year in advance from Niagara falls to New York as we just planned to say we would leave from there if asked.
For insurance we used world nomads but not sure if how they compare price wise now. We just bought the 12 months to be safe and no questions asked plus it covered our others travel to US etc.

Message me if you have any questions :)
