Hi, I am a graduate in IT from NIT Jaipur (2010-2014). I have aggregate 56% in my degree. After study, I did job as a Java developer for 8 months but then I left because of depression and anxiety issues. After that I took some gap and meanwhile I was working on my own startup also freelancing. But I don't have any official documents as proof (only my github account of some projects I made).

In 2018 Dec I started job again as React Native Developer and did it for 6 months. But due to some issue with the main guy I left. They did not provide me experience letter after request.

After that till now I am unemployed. I gave my IELTS and scored 7.5 bands overall.

I am good at coding though. And I desire to take up a related course, the agent suggested me Conestoga College as they accept weak profile (backlog and low CGPA). But they said you have to create fake work experience. I am not comfortable going that route.

Is there any way I can try with such profile ? Should I even bother. Any help will be appreciated !

Whatever you do, NEVER misrepresent yourself by providing fake work experience. If you do, you are courting trouble for sure. You might as well kiss your Canada dreams goodbye.

What kind of unscrupulous agents do you guys have over there? They give the good guys a bad name!

If you have joining letter and the salary slips for the length of the work, you can substitute experience letter with it and explain in SOP that due to xyz reason, you had to leave the company without experience letter but you justified that time period with other evidences. This is not a PR application where job duties / amount of experience is a must. You are covering your gaps with whatever evidences you have available.

Hey @wonderbly, I am not gonna do anything illegal, don't you worry! I am just asking if I have any possibility without doctored documets.

Your first task will be to get accepted into a college. With your BS, you should apply for Post-graduate diploma or certificates and your challenge will be to get into a decent college because there are colleges that will accept almost anyone. In my signature there is a link where I have compiled a list. I urge you to do some research and find out some colleges that you like. Anyone in Tier 1 and 2 should be fine. To maximize chances with your visa, I recommend you choose a program strongly similar to your BS program. Please reply with what your program is. Also, when it comes to writing your Statement of purpose, you will have to convince the Visa officer of your academics. From my limited understanding, NIT considered a high ranking university right? So what you have to do is provide a ranking with the school and explain that it was an extremely competitive environment and that 56% is not bad. Let me know if you have any questions.

Glad to hear that.

No one can tell you for a certainty. My suggestion will be to take a few Professional courses in Programming and Software development, write the exams and get certifications. These might make up for both your average grades and lack of work experience. I'm a Software Programmer (almost 17 years work experience and counting) and whenever I recruit someone new, I'm more interested in what they can do than their degree. But in this case, you are considering academic pursuit so your marks is everything.

I'll say go ahead and apply to different schools, providing good explanation for your grades. Worst case scenario is admission rejection.

Thanks everyone. Can I also mention depression as a reason for the unemployment, or would it be bad idea?

@jigzy - sadly I don't have any salary slips or any document from the second job, I know thats very stupid of me. But now they are not responding to any requests from my side. The projects I made there are live on app stores but don't now if they would even count as evidence or not. I did get my salary in the bank account they opened for me.

@wonderbly - I am a newbie to all this, where do I mention all this story, in the SOP or a separate document. Do I attach whatveer proof I have in the same mail? Also yes, I am aiming for Post Graduate Certificate in Information Technolofgy Business Analysis Course. It is available in Conestoga.

@tapperb - Thanks I will go through the list you made. Yeah it is in top 25 Indian Tech colleges and Govt. backed, but idk if it matter to them. I will try.

a Statement of Purpose (also called Letter of Intent) is usually part of the required documentation for graduate studies. In it you'll detail your academic achievements, qualifications and experience. You'll also motivate why you are applying for the particular course at that particular school. Once you get an admission offer, you'll also write a similar letter to the Visa Office, this time motivating why you deserve a permit to pursue canadian education.

As for highlighting your mental health in your SOP, it's tricky. It might be helpful or might be the "kiss of death" that tanks your chances. It will depend on how you use it.

Below is a link to a great article - a research done by interviewing people who are/were on the Graduate decision boards at various top-notch schools, asking them what they look out for in SoP. It might give you (and others) great pointers:

All the best with your pursuit.

To be honest, my friend completed his b.tech civil in 2016 after he was unemployed actually he was free at home. and his agent told him to make any type of experience related to field of the course which he was choosing. and intresting thing is that he was applying for carpenter and renovation program in Conestoga college which is totally different from his field.he got 6 each bands and he made fake experience from somewhere related to carpentery trade but he wrote good SOP why he is choosing this program and he got visa with his first try. i don't know how it worked but he got visa..

They're not really in the business of verifying work history for study permit applications, though it's still misrepresentation even if you don't get caught.

Based on the history that you provided, I am suggesting a story line and see if that works.

- Apply for Master Programs, not CS offcourse... Try for entrepreneurship based masters. It is very easy to get admission in such programs in Canadian Universities. Most of the universities have such programs.
- If you manage to get admission, explain to VO that you have invested your time to conceptualize that great idea and you can write all your genuine thoughts and just put it in a convincing meaningful fashion
- Whatever work experience you have attached their OL or any payslips that you have.

If this theory doesn't work, then go for colleges but try to stick to the genuine facts.

You are from NIT therefore I assume your school grades would be excellent. You can present your 10th and 12th grades and say in Degree, you could not do well for Xyz reason (Any reason, Fallen sick, depression due to Xyz) but you look forward to do better for future.
