I am single 28 years old but I have a cousin who is a Canadian. is it possible for the cousin to file for me a work permit, is it possible?

You are the one who has to apply for the work permit (not your cousin). Before you can apply for the work permit, you will first have to secure a full time job offer from an employer in Canada. Also, that employer will need to obtain something called an approved LMIA (permission to hire you). Once you have the full time job offer and your employer has obtained the approved LMIA, you can apply for a closed work permit tied to that specific employer.

thanks scilla, the LMA and the employment, how long does it takes to process and under the work permit u said, does it mean I have to go via the embassy for interview?

The LMIA process can take 4-6 months to complete. Then there is additional time required to process the work permit. Interviews usually aren't needed.

thank u very y much scilla , I appreciate ur warm reply, please my cousin who is a Canadian citizen told me to provide my passport photocopy, a letter of consent that I accept that he should sponsor me to Canada, and 7passport photographs, I was told e will filed for me from Canada, latter the embassy will he in touch with me as per my qualifications, security clearance and medical. please from your opinion what type of visa, or arrangement could this mean? thanks

Your cousin cannot sponsor you - it's impossible. I have no idea what kind of arrangement this might be.

thanks scilia. I was told by him jus few minutes ago that it was open work permit, that e want to file from Canada, that e needs to get something done in Canadian court as my sponsor, what do u see to this, thanks

Where are you from? There are very limited circumstances under which someones qualifies for an open work permit.

Regardless, what he's saying doesn't make sense. He can't sponsor you for an open work permit. If you qualify - you have to qualify on your own.

I just looked through your historic posts. It looks like you're from Nigeria. If so, there are no open work permit options available to you.

If someone is offering you an open work permit, they either don't understand Canada's immigration system or are trying to scam you.

thanks scilia, I understand u but m confused, why do u say is not available for me, because am a Nigerian?

There is something called an IEC/Working Holiday Visa that is a type of open work permit. However only people from specific countries qualify (mostly countries in Europe). Nigeria is not on the list of countries that qualifies for an IEC/Working Holiday Visa. So you cannot apply for one because you do not qualify.

Open work permits are only granted to those that qualify. IEC/Working Holiday Visas are one kind of open work permit. Work permits can also be granted to individuals who have a spouse who is in Canada as an international student on a study permit. Also, individuals who have a spouse who is in Canada on a work permit and has a full time job that is NOC skill level A, B or 0.

Unless there's an important piece of information you are not sharing, there is nothing in your profile that would indicate you qualify for an open work permit.

If you think you qualify for an open work permit, you will have to tell us why - in other words, what are the specific criteria you think you meet that make you eligible for an open work permit.

thanks I will get back to u OK but am confused, like seriously, u suggested closed work permit initially, how do I go about it, thanks

It's very straight-forward.

As I explained previously, to qualify for a closed work permit, you first need to get a full time job offer from an employer in Canada. Also, that employer needs to get an approved LMIA. You cannot apply for a closed work permit without these two things.

So the first thing you have to do is find a full time job in Canada.
