Hello Everyone!!
Please allow me to introduce myself, my name is Alicia (Ali) I am a 25 year old born and raised Canadian. And I am desperately in need of some help and advise regarding the immigration process for my boyfriend. I will give you a bit of our history...
We met online Aug 2009, and continued an online friendship that progressed into an online relationship in January 2011.. the following year we decided that phone calls, text messages, emails, facetime and pictures just wasn't enough and we met in person (June 2012). We made the best of our situation by me visiting him every chance I could. Generally every 5-8 months, or whenever I could get a week / 2 weeks holiday time off work. In December 2013 we decided that instead of me traveling all the time, that it was his turn to travel.. He got his passport and made his first trip to see me in February 2014.. Unfortunately thing's went badly at border crossing, (I was traveling back into Canada with him at this point)... And we got tied up in Immigration with their interview process from 12am (when our plane landed) until just after 4am when they finally let us go... The Border Agent questioned every aspect of our relationship, which I expected. But she stated that because of our relationship he had a reason to not leave the country... And at this point we flat out told her that we haven't spent a lot of time together one on one and were wanting to spend more time together to see where exactly our feelings were at and where the relationship was leading.. To this she continued to say that he didn't have a reason to enter the Country because we weren't serious about our relationship... It left me feeling like there was no correct answer. We were honest. They issued him a 3 month visitor record paper in his passport which said he had to leave Canada by May 15th 2014..
In April 2014 during his first visit to the country, things progressed between us and he proposed. I said yes!!! he returned to the United States when he was supposed to "May 15th" but it wasn't long before we were planning for him to visit again. As I was swamped with a heavy work schedule and was unable to travel. ((( He is currently unemployed, has been since April 2012. Due to the lack of jobs available in his hometown.. He does live with his parents, and has continued to search for a job without much luck at this point..))) I am employed and have been since March 2012, same job within the same company. Highly unlikely that anything on my end will change anytime soon lol. Though I am actively searching for a better paying job.
He decided to visit again in mid July 2014, I paid for his ticket with return (For October 15th 2014.. A 3 month stay..) he had planned for travelers insurance on his end etc. He had everything prepared just in case there were issues.... And.... unfortunately again...due to whatever the first Border crossing Agent put on his file.. He was told to visit immigration.. Where he went through the same process as he did the first time, which is what I don't understand... He isn't employed. But his family, friends, vehicle etc is in the USA, he has reason to return... He had a return ticket booked, had travelers insurance... And was planning on staying with me, so he really wouldn't have to spend a whole lot during his stay.. And as I mentioned. I am employed and able to support myself and him during his visit.. Though this time passing through he had told the Border Agent that he was visiting friends, planning on going fishing etc (showed the fishing license he had gotten during his first stay.) the Agent decided he was lying and threatened him with a fine and jail time. Which I feel is completely uncalled for. He has absolutely no criminal record, not so much as a parking ticket against him. He doesn't use drugs, about the worst thing he does is smoke cigarettes. I understand that it was still basically a lie...Because the only friend he would have been visiting would be me... He had decided to come clean with the border agent about the relationship.. And the agent had proceeded to tell him that every time he's going to visit for an extended period of time he's going to go through the same thing, where they may or may not let him enter Canada. Unless he's only staying for a week or so at a time. Which he feels is pointless to pay that amount of money in flights and insurance just for a week or two.. And considering where we are at in our relationship, we would like to spend more than a week or two together at a time... The Border agent had called me in to talk to me as well, and basically went over the same thing. Only continued to add that we should be focusing on Jobs, Schooling and career choices rather than our relationship.. Which again...I feel is our own personal decisions.. Moving on.... The day before he was scheduled to leave Canada (October 14th) we decided to get married... We had a simple, small gathering of a couple friends here in my hometown (Northern Alberta).. Nothing fancy... With the intention of having a renewing of vows on our Anniversary a couple years down the road where we will have all our friends and family together... After we've had a chance to plan and more importantly sort out our situation.
So....Today.....
We are married, and we've decided since I have an older house and some land, that we will be living in Canada.. With hopes of renovating and eventually turning it into our dream home. But here is where the tricky part begins, and where I am going to need help... I am not the greatest at doing research and finding answers.. When I do find something useful, I find 4 or 5 other things that contradict the first thing that I found.. So rather than go through that process again, I thought I would post on here and find out from actual people... What steps to take, what to do, how to do it, and what the quickest, and least painful process for us to move forward will be...
First thing's first..
He's decided to visit me again in April, and I'm hoping some of you can offer advise as to how to get him through Border Crossing without them denying him entry?, a way for him to stay for an extended period of time without getting kicked out or denied entry?..
Next.. What should our next step be?, he wants to live in Alberta Canada with me, and would like to work at least a few hours a week just to help out, so I'm not paying for everything myself.. There are so many options and I just don't know which to choose...
I've heard people talk about Inland and Outland Permanent Residence applications?..
Do any of you know the processing times of these?, what the requirements are?, the cost?, and what the process includes?. I just don't know where to begin.. We would like an option that would allow him to either stay in Canada while his application is being processed, or at the very least allow him to travel between the US and Canada without problem.. The end result ultimately being.. Us being able to live together without fear of him being forced to leave the country, him being able to work in Canada legally, and for us to be able to travel to visit his family for the holidays without him having continued issues with Border Crossing and Immigration..
If anyone can help me out that would be great...
I just don't know where to even begin. It's just really overwhelming and confusing to say the least... A lot of the government websites that I've visited, I really haven't found to be helpful at all... So I'm hoping that you all can shine some light on the situation and make it seem....less awful than I have it imagined in my mind... Thank you all in advance...
