CUSTOMS REGULATIONS

HOUSEHOLD GOODS AND PERSONAL EFFECTS

Immigrants: This is any person moving to Canada, with the intention of establishing a residence for more than 12 months. An immigrant may import free of duty and taxes household and personal effects that were owned and used by him in his former country of residence.
Returning Canadians: May bring back duty free all household and personal effects including car, boat, aeroplane, provided they have been acquired and used six months prior to arrival in Canada. (After 5 years, the 6 months provision is eliminated). There is, however, a valuation limit placed on these goods of $10,000 per item which includes automobiles. Duty & taxes will be levied against any one item that exceeds that limitation. Canadians who have lived outside of Canada for less than 1 year are excluded from the speed program.

Dear All,

Me and my family are planning to be in Toronto within the next 2 months and thus at this stage, it's very important for us to know from you as to:

Q). How did you managed your Cargo / Luggage when you travelled/landed for the first time in Canada.

Specially for the people who travelled from Middle East, did you guys booked any cargo as well, apart from your luggage. If yes, then what's your advice on that.
Would you like to refer any good Cargo movers to us. Newspaper are filled with these adverts, but you don't wanna risk your life belongings with some newbie in the market. So pls do let me know if you know of someone credible as movers.

Thanks in advance and kind regards,
New Comer to Canada

Hi,

Cargo was charged on volume basis not weight.our cargo was around 4 CBM n we paid 5000 dhs in total including insurance.
No hassles at all with the company i mentioned.i mailed company asking for quotation, rate was discussed thru mail, people were sent to my home to pack things,we were given check list on the spot by one of the worker n money was collected at my home.i received bill n insurance papers thru email.i had saved tel numbers also for reference.once we reached toronto, within few days we got mail giving details of person to contact.i called concerned person here in toronto n was asked to send GTF list signed by immigration officer,pp copy, copr copy, cargo bill n insurance papers etc, we had sent them thru mail.our goods were cleared by local agent n we received them at home.

I never went any office neither in dubai nor in toronto,i didnt go for customs clearance,i only met workers at home at both ends .i didnt step out,all happened thru mails n telephone n workers did rest.

We received our goods roughly two wks ago.

Pls check credibility of cargo company b4 choosing any.

Good luck,
Rgds,
Art.
