Hi,
I have dilemma here and I was wondering if someone could help me.
I had applied for PR through the sponsorship program (outside of canada) and got my Request for Submission of Passports today, But I'm currently in Canada visiting my husband with a visitor visa.
My question is do I need to physically leave Canada and go back to my country to have my passport mailed to the Visa office or can I mail my passport while in canada?
Thank you for all your help.

Depends on which country/embassy is processing your application. Unless you're from the United States, don't even consider doing anything except going home and mailing your passport to the embassy from there. Huge risk trying to mail a passport overseas - most countries don't even allow it - and if it's lost, you're screwed. There will be a deadline for getting the passport to your embassy, and an expiration date on the COPR/visa they issue. You have to meet those dates - and you have to get "landed" before the expiration date on the COPR/visa or you'll need to start all over again with a new application. So losing your passport in transit would be a very bad thing.

If you're from the US, you do have a few options available for getting your passport to Buffalo while you're still in Canada - so let us know.

So either from a visa exempt country or when the visa applied for not checked too well to see the application in process.

Of course if you 'mail' your passport it will be known to be coming from Canada and if not previously aware of your being in Canada this is something to raise questions. Also what happens if the passport is needed in Canada, for any number of reasons, while 'mailed' away?

Perhaps best to take your passport back home and make it available from the proper location that it's expected. Is it not generally the best of news to have the passport requested?

Likely all resolved positively in the short term provided nothing learned that could be a difficulty between now and then.

Thank you for all your inputs. From what I gather from your posts, I think it's best to go back and then send my passports to the embassy from there.
But I wish I didn't have to make that extra trip, since I'm already here.
I would like to tell everyone not to trust the CIC online status check, since mine is still showing APPLICATION RECEIVED. It seems like it never gets updated.
Thank you again for your help.

It appears that you don't have much of a choice in your case. You would be required to return to your home country and submit the passport from there. It is one of the risks you have to take when you apply for PR outside Canada. If you come visit Canada while outland PR process is in play, you have to consider the risk of having to cut your trip short to return to your home country anytime during your visit to Canada.

I'm a little confused. My South Korean wife is here in Canada with me waiting out the PR process on a visitor's visa. Last week we got a request to complete a document called "Appendix 'A' Passport Request". Although the form was called Passport Request, the Manila VO said they didn't want her passport, just the completed form that showed all of her "family members". We completed it and returned it by email. There was a box on Appendix A that asked her to provide an address where her passport could be returned. We indicated our Canadian address and advised the VO that she was now living in Canada on a visitor's visa.

I'm told by others on this board that because she is from a visa exempt country, my wife won't need to send her passport when her visa comes through, but rather will get a COPR letter. If she does get a PPR are you saying that she will have to return to Korea to send her passport?

I think it depends on which country you are from
For example... it is illegal for someone from India to mail or courier their passports. It has to be carried to India by a person
Yet I have seen other people send them by registered mail or courier with a prepaid return envelope and have had no problem

If you are from a visa exempt country you may only have to send a scanned copy of the page in your passport with all the information on it.

Good luck

Don't they require the actual passport so that they can put a COPR foil in the passport? They won't be able to do that with a photocopy of passport.

According to operation bulletin 348, CIC will no longer issue counterfoil for PR from visa exempt countries. That's good to know. However continuing reading, it does say an officer may use discretion in determining whether it is necessary to see the original passport or whether a photocopy of all passport pages is sufficient.

Even though a photocopy is all they may require, they can still ask for original passport. It is up to them to decide.
