When they ask for an explanation of why i don't have the Notice of Assessment, Should I simply say Because I don't have one? I am employed have been throughout the majority of those years. What should I do to support my claim?

I wonder y u haven't claim your taxes in 6 years ...i will suggest you to file your tax return as soon as possible. are you PR or citizen?
it will create lot of problems in future if you dont file it now. let me do some more research on it to help you. I am pretty sure that people here will sure help you out.

Thank you so much! Honestly... It just snowballed! One year turned into two and then three and so on and then after that I thought. Crap! Where do I begin with that, I did however pay taxes and E.I. through EVERY SINGLE employer.

If I were to file my taxes and find out that I owe money, does this also compromise the application even if i was still financially stable enough to support my spouse?

Hi Michelle

It shouldn't really effect your application. Owing money in taxes shouldn't disqualify you from sponsoring a spouse. I applied half a year ago so don't remember 100% but you don't actually have to submit notice of assessments do you?? You just have to submit an Option C print out. When you request your Option C print out I'm sure it'll say on there what your tax situation is.

I would really suggest you make a plan to get your taxes filed and then submit an explanation and proof that you are sorting things out (copies of the documents you will be submitting) along with the tax forms from your employers showing taxes have been paid. Just be honest because while it's not a reason for rejection, any sort of lie on your application would be considered fraud and would result in a rejection.

Also, somehow I think that if you owed the government money, you would have heard about it by now!

Good luck!

She probably won't. Before we met, my hubby didn't file his for about 5 years. I encouraged him to do it and when he did he found out he owed the government.

Yes - you still need an option C. Call Revenue Canada and request one. They will mail it to your home address.

Hey ... so I didn't file my taxes for three years before I married my husband and started the application process.

I filed the day after I got married, had my notice of assessment 5 weeks later, then called the government for my Printout C thing and that came in 3 days ! :)

just do it, but at your rate, I'd hire H&R Block or something! haha You can also see the box on the bottom of the check list says that the MAIN reason why applications are returned is because of lack of Option C printout. So you should do it for real.

It's not that hard, and right now the tax office is probably slow because it's not tax season, but it will be soon so get started!

Also I've NEVER paid the government taxes I owe over 1 K ... I just keep waiting until they owe me money and they can take it... it didn't affect me getting a mortgage, I can't see it affecting the spousal sponsorship :) They just want to know you file

I'm not sure about Canada, but if you fail to pay taxes in the US, for even one year, and they catch you, and it's proven you deliberately chose not to pay, you can face a stiff jail sentence.

...just saying.

For goodness sake - stop being lazy and file your damn taxes, it is your obligation! If you've been paying a reasonable amount out of your paycheques and have some deductions, you aren't going to owe anything.

It doesn't matter even if you owe taxes, your sponsorship will still be approved (as mine was, owing $2000 in back taxes) and the Canadian government is pretty relaxed about collecting.

My husband (sponsor) hadn't filed his taxes in about 4 years, and didn't get his option C because he was really slack, and it was sent to an old address, and so we ended up including about 12 months of payslips for him instead and this was really worrying me, but we got sponsorship approval okay.

Just to say though, he has now filed all his old taxes!

I was about 6 years behind on my taxes. I just got busy with school and such and got farther and farther behind. Finally the government caught up with me and started to get a bit threatening, saying I owed them $9,000, but that was with no deductions. I got 4 of them done so far and I'm working on the last two. I think that overall, they owe me money.

You have to pay your previous taxes if you want to sponsor somebody if not it would be an hindrance.
