I am happy to announce as of feb 1,2011 I am a landed canadian immigrant!! ;D
it only took 1.5 months for spouse eligiblity + issue my PR visa. I've been living here for 8 years prior to applying so everyones is different. I sent it to my home country. my correspondent/relative/representative in my country handled passport delivery and pickup for me.
flagpole at the US border is a tricky one if its your first time. once they looked at my american visa, they stuck an orange sticker on my car, told me to park my car and go inside to process. when it was my turn at the line up, the officer asked me what i was crossing for, I said to land as canadian..he said "to do that I have to reject you from coming in to united states so canada can take you back" and gave me a rejection letter which canada didnt even bother looking at. but told me to present the orange flagpole paper to canada. so i made a U-turn to enter canada..
~~~At the Canada border..~~~
At the booth, officer who handled my passport, asked: 1) am i bringing over $10,000? 2) any weapons? drugs? 3) is this car rental or own 4) did you buy/rent the car here.. after answering those, he asked me to park my car and go inside. There was nobody that day and i was the only one. it looked like a bank inside with police "tellers" behind the counter..so one of them called me up and i gave him my passport + generic landing paper, he told me to go sit and wait. my spouse who is my sponsor was with me that day, he called me up and they had printed out their version of it which I signed,then she signed, and after confirming the address he gave me a 60 year anniversary pin and said welcome to canada
that is my experience
