My husband is Colombian and lives in Italy with his family. He's lived there over 15 years and hasn't gotten his Italian citizenship yet. He keeps renewing his work visa instead. We want to do the sponsorship to get him here in Canada. My concern is that this will look like a huge red flag on the application. His sister and i have tried to get him to apply for the citizenship but he refuses. He's also bipolar and says he needs help with everything, even though his sister says she will help him with the citizenship. I'm at a loss, can anyone help? He's using the excuse that he thinks i just want an EU citizenship because I've suggested numerous times that i move to be with him in Italy so we're not apart anymore.

Not sure why you would think him not applying for Italian citizenship would be an issue. It makes no difference for a sponsorship app.
However, the fact that he thinks you are trying to use him to get EU citizenship definitely suggests a relationship issue. What is the relationship history?
Ok that's good to know. We lived together for 4 months in italy last year but i don't think that qualifies as conjugal/common law since it was less than 1 year and no joint bank account or bills in my name there.
We've been in a relationship since October 2016 and he's said he would get his citizenship since I've met him. He tried to get a visitor visa but it was rejected, one of the issues were ties to his country not being strong enough. So that tells me that he really should have gotten that citizenship, he wouldn't have even needed to get a visitor visa as an Italian. My fear is that it will get brought up since we have to disclose the visitor visa rejection.
In you are in a genuine relationship, visa rejections and so on won’t matter... give enough proof that the relation is real, that’s all what is needed.
It won't get brought up. It is irrelevant to a sponsorship app wherher he did or didn't apply for Italian citizenship.
You refer to him as your husband. So I assumed that you are married to him. Why are you even considering conjugal/common law?
Yes we've been married since June 2018. Another person on here brought up conjugal/commonn law because they said if we didn't live together it would be an issue. It's in the comment thread.

You can't claim conjugal / common law since you are married to him. However due to the fact that you have not lived with your husband for so long, it may be an issue with IRCC. They may question your relationship and may think you are sponsoring him for PR convenience's sake since you made no effort for a year to sponsor him after your marriage.
If you visited your husband during this time since the date of your marriage, I think u should be fine. Many of us got married and only after some months applied for sponsorship.
So we were in a position where we could not afford legal advice. We were told by immigration Canada and a very brief, free of charge conversation with a lawyer that the quickest way to be together physically would be by doing a visitor visa and inland sponsorship/open work permit. During the time we've been apart my husband had a mental breakdown and was diagnosed bipolar. He did not want to be bothered by me about anything concerning paperwork. It's been an uphill battle to get him into treatment and just day to day mood swings, etc. He finally did the visitor visa and it was rejected. A friend of mine referred to this forum in hopes it might help.
I did live with him from April to August 2018, we got married on June 30 2018. I have not been able to visit him since because of our finances. He's not working and I'm working 2 jobs. I'm still paying off my debt from the last visit. I have no money to afford a trip at this time. It's around $1000 for the flight each time. Plus having to make sure i have enough money to cover my bills and rent back home while I'm gone. It sucks, i want to be with him and i wish i could hop on a plane everyday. I've brought up me moving there with him but he refuses. So we're in this stagnant moment right now.
Sorry about financial problems. I understand how it is, but I don’t imagine not seeing your beloved one for a year... at least for a week. Him not getting Italian citizenship is okay for immigration, but not seeing each other, him blaming u that u want only to move to eu most likely will be seen as a red flag. I would do all possible to meet more before or while applying for spousal sponsorship and make your relationship stronger!
Have you looked into the possibility of moving to Italy? I imagine if he is unemployed he will not be able to renew his visa at a certain point. Do you have many in person visits before you got married? That will definite be a factor when you eventually apply for sponsorship.
