humanitarian & compassionate -> Permanent Residence (any input appreciated)

Hi there, canadavisa community! Was wondering if any members could help shed some light on a few things.

A while ago, my mom applied to stay in Canada under the "Humanitarian and Compassionate" application.
We then received a piece of paper entitled "Humanitarian And Compassionate Results Approval In Principle"

I know we need to take the physical exam in order to advance, but we need the gov to send us a confirmation number?( so i was told)

How do we advance from here? we wait?
What's the process from this stage to PR status/card?

I also want to apply for my father under this category. I have the application package but what is this Approval in Principle?
Have you received this after submitting the application package or what? Are you using any lawyer/consultant or doing yourself.
Please write down the procedure and any specific conditions for this. It would be a great help.
