if you return in a private vehicle, like your own car

If you return to Canada in a private vehicle, such as your own car, you do not need a permanent resident card. You can use your Record of Landing (IMM 1000) or Confirmation of Permanent Residence (IMM 5292 or IMM 5688) instead.

You would have been given these documents:

If you applied from overseas: at the same time as your VISA
If you applied from within Canada: when you landed at your local VISA office
An officer will ask you questions to make sure you meet all of the residency requirements before they allow you to come back to Canada.

Do I need any thing else other than COPR or record of landing to enter canada using private vehicle which belongs to my friend (of course he will be driving)
Thanks

Yea, you need your passport.

Bello guys,
I applied for PR on January 2014 and I had to travel outside Canada for 10 days.
At the check in the girl told that the system was asking questions to me such as:
Are you living in canada?
Do you have a visa to come back?
Wich one? When does it expired?

And then she let me go...it's the first time it happend to me and all the time I was asking my spec why?
Do you have any suggestions?

Does that mean you cannot travel outside the country and come back on a plane while waiting for PR Card?

Yes, that is correct. You can only enter Canada by road with your CoPR and passport.
