No dude. "It's an expression!" is not a blank check. Own up to the words. "Coming to this country on a floating door" is not a metaphor for a person's inability to learn new skills. It's about mocking desperate people coming here in desperate ways. I know it's "jokey" xenophobia, but that doesn't make it noble.

In any case, a lot of people on this thread are "piling on" (this is an expression from American Football) the OP and the mother. The OP asked whether there was a way to bypass the language requirement. Beyond aging out or having a mental or psychological impairment, it's clear that there is not. We all agree that it's much better to know the language of the place you're living. We all know that the Citizenship Act prioritizes this. We all know that with varying amounts of time and effort many people can gain significant proficiencies in foreign languages even at older ages.

Great. But I'm gonna say that the OP knows a lot more about their mother than any of us. And I'm gonna say that the mother knows a lot more about the challenges of living her life without the necessary language skills than we do. We don't have to explain or exact those difficulties for her. She knows. And let's not kid ourselves that it's harder on us than it is on her.

Anglo-Montrealer here. (Et oui, je parle français, mais je sais bien que ce n'est pas facile)
+1 for eileenf.

Recently I have noticed that people come here just to mock others. Reminds me of a character from Simpsons who always say ah-ah, making fun of everyone.

This is a forum to help people and should be respected so people can ask questions without the fear of being ridiculed. Sadly, recently that hasn't been the case. It's good to know that there are people on this forum who's life are perfect and have not had issues. Bravo. Not only are their life's perfect, they look down on people who have had a hard life. They fun of those who come here seeking advice, expecting suggestions. Instead they get fingers pointed at them with a ah-ah.

Good for you all. I hope you never experience hardship in your life, and if you do and seek help, I hope someone helps you, instead of ridiculing you

Thanks eileenf for trying to use the forum the way it was meant to, to help and not to judge

+1 eileenf - you rock. It's so easy for us to simply pile on the OP not knowing the entire background behind the post and you've put it beautifully for the rest of us.

As raymasa said above - let's use the forum in the manner it was intended to be used - to help others and in turn be helped.

Its not right to judge people without knowing their circumstances, I can imagine the sitution of OP and her mother.

I am from India, and their lots of people of previous generation are not even educated but they have worked hard to give their kids good education and carear. They have made lots of sacrifices to make their kids successful. Now those kids are Drs, Engineers with good jobs, helping the community and paying high taxes to Canadian Govt. And also now its their turn to do something for their parents. All they asking Canadian govt to let their parents live with them so they can take good care of their parents.

And i know u guys will say y u need citizenship for this, citizenship is required not to participate in politics or for passport it is required for freedom to travel. Do not worry all the time about Visitor Visas, or maintaining days for PR.

Hi guys,

Speaking of language my wife will apply next week just one day before the new law..she did one year diploma in a college in Canada and the language of instruction for all the diploma courses was English..in the CIC website it says if you complete a secondary/post secondary diploma in English or French then this is considered as a proof of language proficiency and the CIC call center confirmed this to me..my friends are telling me the officer might reject her application if she/he doesn't see an English test results with the required scores..what do u guys think? We are very short of time for this now and will not get an appointment for any exam before June 11 :-[

While taking one of the approved tests will be accepted without question (as long as she gets the required score), language skills can be proved with a diploma of completion of secondary or post-secondary program conducted in English or French either in Canada or abroad.

For more information, please see the following link, under the section that starts with "Proof of completion of a secondary or post-secondary program conducted in French or English, either in Canada or abroad, includes:"

You cannot send in a post dated application. And besides if she qualifies on June 10 thus cannot sign application until June 11. Thus she will be under the new rule regardless.

Exactly, you have to be eligible to apply for citizenship the day before you submit your application.

When would she complete her residency time? Is she already have completed it, you may send it, but keep in mind that it may take longer than 1 day to reach CIC in Sydney, depending on where you live. When I sent my application via Purolator, the fastest was 2 days.

In this case I agree with the troll. The poster did in fact say his wife qualifies on the 10th. This means she unfortunately can't sign the application until the 11th - which means she's too late and has to apply under the new rules and needs to wait at least another year.
