How to pin the date when you become a naturalized citizen?

I keep my own docs.

My point was that since your parents were almost certainly naturalized the same day, if they had records it would help you narrow the date down.

At any rate, you have suggestions for how to handle it otherwise. I wouldn't unduly delay submitting your app for this.

Thanks, but I know how bureaucratic Canadian government can be when it comes to docs like this...so i am still concerned that the app might get rejected given the date is a guesstimate...

Up to you of course, but if you apply as I suggested above and attach proof of that, I think chances very low it would be returned.

Yes (complete) - and I repeat, I don't think date of your citizenship is relevant except for identification purposes. (And they'll have your passport number etc). It might be relevant or important if eg citziesnhip of your children was linked to date of your citizenship.

The know that getting this information takes more than a year.

But again, up to you.

I got it when I was in my teens. I have a copy of the certificate which does not have an effective date on it. It's really mind boggling...


Did you put in a guesstimate date and got the PR for your spouse?

My husband was naturalized in 2004 as a minor and his certificate doesn't say "effective date" but it has a date on it which was the date of naturalization. Are you absolutely sure that yours has no date anywhere on it? I find it extremely surprising that the certificate they gave you as proof of your citizenship is missing the date.

If you reapply for the certificate it's taking well over a year btw. You know you were a teenager at the time -any recollection of what grade you were in? What time of year it was? Just put your most accurate guess on there and write a letter of explanation and a copy of your certificate (iirc that is mandatory anyway for naturalized citizens).

I remember attending a small room in which you see a bunch of people who were to receive a certificate from a judge.
I was handed a piece of certificate and I thought that was it. The certificate tells you that its important to be an upstanding citizen and protect Canada etc. There is nothing on the back of the certificate. And I've kept it until this day. I believe that I received my citizenship card in mail. And "if" the citizenship card came with a formal certificate, I believe I would have kept it.

My parents received their citizenship cards in mail as well, and theirs have YY and MTH shown on their citizenship card. And mine, which was received in 99, shows YY-AP only. Quite strange.

Yes. I did. And I have include a letter of explianation on why I do not know the date.
From the photos, I guessed that it's summer/fall ..etc.

And both my spouse sponsorship and our PGP (me as a co-sponsor) for my MIL was approved.

If you spouse has a "certificate" then there is a date. I do not have a certificate and same for OP. I got a card that's similar to a driver's license and it's called the citizenship card. That one does not have a date on it. It's weird but that's how it was back in the days.

But again, I don't think the date is that important for spousal sponsorship.

The op had said they have a certificate a couple times but also indicated they have a card iirc hence the confusion I think. Anyway I agree with you that the actual date is not terribly important

You are right. I re-read the posts and somewhere there he also mention some certificate...

So up till 2012, a card and a commemorative certificate are given. But I haven't seen the ceritificate after the oath date. My parents kept them in a "safe" place which they do not remember any more.
