how to mail in visitor extension request?

Supposing my visitor record expires on July 1st, how should I mail in my extension request?

1. Should I just drop it in the standard Canada Post mail, or get some form of certified and signed delivery?
2. Considering #1 - when should I send it? A lawyer suggested that I mail it in a few days before the deadline, thus maximizing the time I am allowed to stay in Canada. Is there any need for the application to arrive before July 1st?

1. Recorded delivery is best.
2. It has to arrive before July 1st which is a Sunday, so it will have to arrive there by the Friday or you will be out of status and need to apply for restoration.

S/he is trying to get an extra 9 days of implied status it appears.

Excellent question. I think the online submission was down a few weeks ago when I checked.

PMM - thanks so much for your response; it makes sense. I wonder why the lawyer suggested waiting until just before expiration to mail it in. It seems like I should do it a week ahead to ensure that the documents arrive as expected.
