How to legally work in Canada?

Hello everyone,

First of all I would like to apologize if I'm opening here a repetitive topic. I'm just looking for an advice in regards to my question - How to legally work in Canada? In other words - What opportunities I have based on my current status to obtain work permit in Canada ?

I'm from Slovakia (Europe) and I'm 28 years old. I'm currently working one year as a Project Manager for IT company here in Slovakia. I participated with my girlfriend on Working Holiday Program (we got one year open work permits) and I worked 8 and half months in Canada.

I'm really missing Canada (society, beautiful nature, working opportunities etc.) and to be honest - in my dreams I want to live there again. But I know, I have to have a work permit. So here is the point why I'm posting this topic - What can I do for obtaining work permit in Canada? What are my opportunities based on my current status and previous Canadian experience? Where should I start for making my dream happen? Currently, I don't have any job offer from Canadian employer.

I will be very glad for any advice from you guys.

Thank you in advance.

Peter

You really have two options - both require finding an employer in Canada first. So your first step regardless of what you do is to find an employer in Canada willing to offer you a full time job.

One option would be to come to Canada again on a working holiday visa but this time through the Young Professionals or International Co-op classes (once you have a job offer): http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/resources/tools/temp/work/opinion/experience/bilat.asp

If for some reason the working holiday visa option doesn't work, then the employer who has offered you a full time job will have to obtain an approved LMIA (this is expensive for the employer and takes a number of months). Once your employer has an approved LMIA, you can apply for a closed work permit tied to that specific employer.

Hi scylla,

Thank you for your advice!

I understand my both options, I just wanted to add a little question - Is there any way to get at least part-time work permit if I will attend some study program/course? (Because I saw this option somewhere during my investigation, but it is maybe not applicable for me)

Many thanks for your help. I wish that this forum should have many helpful users like you!

Yes - if you come to Canada as an International Student on a study permit - then you will qualify to work off campus for up to 20 hours each week.

To be approved for a study permit, you must be coming to Canada to engage in full time studies (your studies cannot be part time). You must also be able to show that you have sufficient funds to cover your first year tuition and first year living expenses - this means you will have to show a bank account balance of at least $25K just to be approved for the visa. The full time program you take in Canada will also have to make sense in light of your previous education and experience (i.e. you will have to show that you are a genuine student and that you aren't just using the study permit as a way of getting to Canada).

The earliest you would be able to start school in Canada is January. You would need to start by applying to school program in Canada and being accepted into a program.

Hello Dear friends,

I am writting from Georgia.

We are travel Agancy from Georgia, and we were interested to help Georgian people to immigrate to Canada by work permit.. We got offer from ARIS Immigration Canada, Consultant Oleksandr Orbetev. He asked us minimum 6000, max 14000 per candidate, and promised to find and send work permits to each of the applicants. The working places were Restaurants, Fish Factories, Warehouses, Constructions, Barbers, Hotels ETC. He requires all the paiments before getting Visa.. Can you advice me something about this company, about this service.. I do not want to be cheated not me and not other applicants who ask me help.. Or can you give me right way, a company who will help me to begin the programm. Stabil company, with good feedback.

Thanks for attention,

Best Regards,

Teona

It's a scam. Don't give them any money.

The right way is to find a job with a company in Canada directly. Agencies who ask for money in exchange for jobs are scams.

It's not that easy or simple. There is no specific company you can contact. In fact, most companies aren't willing to go through the LMIA process to hire a foreign worker. Your best bet is to apply for jobs through reputable job web sites such as the Canadian Job bank and hope you get lucky.
