Hello, I was born in the US(1983) to a Canadian father(of natural Canadian birth - with one natural born Canadian parent) and an American mother. My brother was born in Canada 2 years before me and has a dual citizenship. Am I eligible for Canadian citizenship? My Canadian grandmother helped me look into it a few years ago and she said i was eligible, can anyone else verify this? If so, what would my next steps be?

Many thanks
Ian

Try completing this online self assessment tool provided by the CIC:

If you do in fact qualify for citizenship, the tool will tell you what next steps to take.

that was fast, thank you much.

forms already printed and filled out.

canada makes this so much easier them some other countries. :)

Congratulations!!! :) You are technically a Canadian citizen as a children of Canadian born parent! It is just a matter of applying. One thing to note, since you are not a natural born or naturalized citizen, you won't be able to transfer Canadian citizenship to your children. However you can sponsor your children as a permanent resident and they can become a naturalized Canadian citizen.
