Hi,

I just moved to Canada. I have an Indian DL, but that was issued last month only, though I am proficient in driving. Can anyone let me know how long would it take for me to get a full time Canadian DL?

Seniors Qorax/Leon: I am planning to come to Canada in Toronto from India.I have a query: I have 16 years exp in driving but the address on my Indian license is different from the address on Passport. Will it be an issue when I would apply a license in Toronto ? Though, I am trying to get Letter of Authentication. Kindly reply..

No, that shouldn't matter.

Hi friends! I'm confused...
First of all, I'm in downtown Toronto and I don't drive. But I've had a Minnesota Drivers License since I was old enough to drive (16). Now that I'm here, I want an Ontario license so I can cash cheques, etc - more for identification purposes rather than driving, but I don't want the photo ID-only card in the event that I either end up driving again someday or return to Minnesota.

I have my US Passport, U.S. Passport Card, Minnesota Drivers License (expiry July 2019), and a certified stamped official birth certificate. Should this be enough? I know I need to go to the Service Ontario at 777 Bay. About how long do you think I'd be waiting to receive my license (in Minnesota it takes 7-10 days; other states like Arizona, Illinois and North Dakota you get it right there the day you apply for it). Thanks in advance.

The exact requirements depend on the province but normally you need a translation of your license as well as possibly a drivers abstract. If you can prove that you have a valid drivers license, you will usually be allowed to take the basic road test right away to get a probationary license instead of waiting on learners for a year. If you can prove that you have more than 2 years driving experience, you can be allowed to take the advanced road test right away in order to get your full license.

Hi Leon,
I am a little confused regarding the driving particulars. I landed in Toronto during Janaury 2014. I had my driving license and driving particulars as issued from RTO in India with me. However i did not apply for any license for almost 1 year and 4 months. Now I am planning to get a license. But since my driving particulars issued by the RTO is more than 6 months old before the date of applying for the license here, would it be valid. I have heard that the waiting period is waived for people having driving particulars less than 6 months on the date of application.

Hi,

I understand you have mentioned the whole process assuming that we have home country issued driving license.
I have a tough situation here. I don't have a driving license yet. I'm currently taking driving classes.

Any inputs for people like me. I know you don't see many like me, however, greatly appreciated if you can suggest what should be done.
I'm taking classes now. I am aiming to get a driving license in couple of months.

I won't be able to get any 12 or 24 months IDP/IDL considering the fact that my license would be latest.

What process would suit for me to drive in Canada?

Cheers,
A.

You can try but odds are that they will say that since you haven't driven in such a long time, you need to start from scratch. However, no way to find out unless you try.

The best thing for anybody coming to settle in Canada is take care of your drivers license right away or at least within the 2-3 months period they give you, even if you don't intend to drive right away.

So you will arrive in Canada with a brand new drivers license? In most cases, you would be allowed to get a GDL license (in Ontario G2). This license allows you to drive alone and you can try for the full license after 2 years. If you do not come from a country that has an exchange agreement with your province, you will however have to take the written exam and basic road test in order to get your GDL license.

Hi,

thought to check if GCC ( Gulf country) licenses are valid. I do have License which is Valid across countries like Dubai, Saudi, Oman, license holder for more than 24 months..
