Hi everyone... i was just wondering how i can extend my husbands stay as a visitor to Canada. Although he has only been here in Canada for one month, in the case that the sponsorship doesnt happen before september, how can he stay here longer as a visitor while his application is pending? I have already received sponsorship approval and the last i heard is that htey received his medical. we applied via outland spousal sponsorship and he is an american citizen and I am a canadian citizen.

Thank you.

He can simply apply online to extend his stay prior to his status expiring...even a few days before.

What about visa exempt countries? Do you need to apply like a month before your visitor status expire?

It is quite simple and generally easy to get a visitor extension (at least US-Can, don't know about other countries).

It can all be done online at the CIC website. He will download some PDF forms, fill them out, upload them back into his online application. He will need to scan and upload his passport, some specific-sized photos (per instructions), proof of finances (or proof of financial support from you/someone), and a letter of explanation that explains why he wants to extend his stay (he can ask up to a year, I believe, they may not grant exactly the amount you ask for, but he can always apply again later...).

I was asked to do a medical exam within a few months of my visa extension being granted, fyi.

If you have proof that you're on your way to filing for PR sponsorship, that can also be uploaded as part of the "letter of explanation" attachment.

Just do it before his current status expires. CIC's website suggests 30 days before expiry. It's not absolute, however.

FYI, a person has 90 days after the end of their current status to apply for "restoration of status" which is similar, but I think it costs more and may undergo a bit more scrutiny, but the avenue for restoration exists.

Once he leaves the US, his application and/or extension are ended. A visa extension does not grant right of re-entry. If he left and came back, it would just be a whole new visitor status as determined by CBSA.

How can I extend my stay as a visitor?

If you want to extend your stay in Canada, you should apply at least 30 days before your status expires.
It's not a requirement but rather a good idea/suggestion to apply 30 days before.

If your application to extend your stay is in the system, then you can remain as a visitor on "implied status" while CIC makes their decision (so it's okay, according to CIC, if they don't finish processing your extension request before the end of your current status.

This "implied status" is not the same "implied status" that comes with submitting an INLAND PR sponsorship PLUS the OWP application.

This is "implied status" only as it relates to your visitor extension request.

Hi, I'm from the states and I just got married to my husband who is a Canadian Citizen, I came to canada for the wedding and stayed after so we can put together our spousal sponsor application, however, my time is running out and we want to submit an application to extend my stay. I wrote a letter of explanation and my husband wrote a letter stating he'll support me financially. My question is, are these 2 letters enough to prove that we want to submit our application and enough to prove that he will support me?

.....To whom it may concern,
this is an addition document to explain my particular situation in applying to extend my stay as a visitor in Canada.
I would like to extend my stay so as to complete my application for Permanant Residence through the Family Class, as well as to stay with my husband during the process.
My husband and I have been together for a total of two and a half years. We met and started dating long distance back in Decemeber of 2012. After a year of dating and visits we were engaged. We planned our wedding and in May of 2015 I traveled to Canada for our wedding. Our wedding took place with friends and family a month later, June 13, 2015. After the wedding I continued staying in Canada with my husband, since I'm allowed a 6 month visit.
Since i've been here, we've been working on our sponsor application, gathering documents, and proof of our relationship. We will be submitting our application within the next 2 months. Since being apart would just be more of an emotional and financial strain on us, we wanted to submit my extention application as soon as possible.
I am requesting a 12 month extention to allow enough time to submit our application and wait for it to be processed.
I understand that as a visitor in Canada, I am not allowed to work or go to school. Because I am not able to work, my husband has been financially supporting me since I arrived in Canada and will conintue to do so. My only intent is to stay with my husband. If my extention is denied, or if Permanant Residence is not granted, I would leave Canada, so as to comply with CIC's wishes.
I thank you for your time and conisderation of my extention application.
Sincerely,

Dear sir/Madam,
I'm writing this additional statement to provide proof of financial support for my wife, who is applying to extend her stay in Canada.
Since the day my wife has arrived in Canada, I have been financially responsible for her. She has been living with me at my parents home ( ) and will continue to do so, if her extension is granted. I provide her with food, clothing, and whatever else she needs to live here with me comfortably. Below, you will find an official statement of my intent to financially support my wife while in Canada.
I, , hereby agree to guarantee and be liable to financially support my wife while she is a visitor in Canada. If her extention is denied, I will provide her with means of transportation back to the United States before her legal status expires. This guarantee will remain in effect as long as she is a visitor in Canada until she becomes a Permanent Resident, if granted.
I confirm that I am employed and work a full time job as a ( ) for the past 5 years. I've included with this letter, cheque stubs from the past 6 months.
I thank you for taking the time to review my wife's application, as I would love for my wife to be able to continue staying with me during this application process.
