Hello
Kindly share your thoughts on this .
I became a convention refugee in June 2021.
I became Permanent resident in January 2024.
As per my understanding instead of having 2 years and 6 months , I only have 1 year , 3 months to count towards citizenship. So I need 1 year and 9 months to apply for citizenship.
can I apply for citizenship in October or November 2025 ?
Please help .
According to IRCC, what @scylla and @Simba112 shared is correct. you can check for yourself here https://eservices.cic.gc.ca/rescalc/resCalcStartNew.do
You can only carry 365 days from your time as a convention refugee (calculated at 0.5, so only 730days regardless of how long you've been a claimant)
You need to be a PR for 2years before applying for citizenship
@spamed's case is the exception, not the rule

It is right.
It's not. If you really think you are right, provide the direct link to the IRCC page on citizenship that indicates you can claim more than 1 year of pre-PR time towards the residency requirement.

Lol. Okay professor. My sister just got her PR based on the calculation I did.
To set record straight, I am not a Professor and my reply was based on the guidelines posted on IRCC Website... Secondly, We have heard a lot of " My sister, my friend, my buddy", but I would strictly based on prevailing guidelines. Its okey to be corrected, and dont call me names.

I came to Canada as a refugee on January 2021, my case was accepted June 2022. Recently I received my PR card May 2024.

When I can apply for passport. What is the processing, if you can please explain me that.

See the citizenship calculator on the IRCC website to determine when you can apply it will be at least two years before you qualify.

If you can't help, don't reply.
It's all on the web site and easy to find. You need to have lived in Canada 3 out of the 5 previous years to qualify. Two of those years must be post PR which is why I said you won't qualify to apply for at least another two years since you just became a PR. This is physical residency so you need to deduct time spent outside of Canada. You can count pre PR time but only a half a day credit per day spent in Canada and only from the time your claim was accepted and you became a protected person. The rest is here: https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/canadian-citizenship.html

If you don't leave Canada at all in the next two years then sometime in June or July 2026. Make sure you use the IRCC calculator (as I said earlier) because if you are short even a day, you will be refused.
