There's a waiting period of 3 months before you qualify. See here: http://www.health.gov.on.ca/en/public/programs/ohip/ohipfaq_mn.aspx

Depending on where you live in Ontario, you can go directly to a Service Ontario centre, there's a list here: https://www.services.gov.on.ca/locations/mapLocations.do

Good luck.

You can apply at one of the Service Ontario centre anytime after landing but you have to wait for 3 months to get your Health Card. They say 3 months but one will get the card within 7-9 weeks....So apply right away and wait for the card....

You might get your health card earlier but it could be that it will not be valid until the 3-months waiting period is over...

I am not sure you need a proof of address to apply for the Health Card...You can give your friends/relatives address as of now and tell the person you are staying here if he asks you about the address. Once you get your card you can do the change of address online to the new address you will be living....

Proof of residence and proof of address is 2 different things... you can use your CoPR or the visa in your passport as proof of residence.

You can get the application at http://www.forms.ssb.gov.on.ca/mbs/ssb/forms/ssbforms.nsf/FormDetail?openform&ENV=WWE&NO=014-0265-82.

In addition, you can get ideas of the documents they will accept at http://www.forms.ssb.gov.on.ca/mbs/ssb/forms/ssbforms.nsf/GetAttachDocs/014-9998E-82~1/$File/9998-82E.pdf.

For proof of immigration status, you can use your COPR

For proof or residency (ie proof of address) you need a document from the list that has your address and your name. Did you get a bank account? If so, use your first statement once you receive it. If you are getting a driver's license you can use that. Otherwise, get an Ontario ID card. Since there is a 3 month waiting period for coverage, it doesn't really matter if you wait a couple weeks more to apply until you have your documents together.

For support of identity, use your foreign passport (assuming you have signed it)

reason I said what I said was cus when I submitted papers to the CRA, I was declared a non-resident for tax purposes and given a TTN I was told I was non-resident because this was not my country of residency. so therefore when I land and get CoPR this wouldn't then become my proof of residency? these things are starting to get real confusing...

Otherwise, get an Ontario ID card.

Oh Canadiana, there is no such thing as Ontarion ID card. I live here and I would have it if it would exist. The ID in Ontario is, usually the Driver's License, if someone does not have that, then the ID may be the Passport, and if someone does not have that either, the ID is the Health card.

jot1988, when you landed here you were given at the immigration a kit on how to start everything here, including application for the Health Card. read those papers. Or use the links provided here which are equally valid. For address, use the lacation where you live right now, and you can change it later, on line. But remember your health card will be valid ONLY after 3 months since you landed. So don't get sick!

Good luck!

Actually, the MTO and Service Ontario concur that Ontario Photo Cards exist and serve as IDs.

Specifically,
Code:
"The Ontario Photo Card is government-issued photo identification that allows non-drivers aged 16 years of age and over to access government, financial or business services that require proof of identity."
Source: http://www.ontario.ca/en/services_for_residents/ONT06_026364.html

You can find additional information at http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/driver/photo-card.shtml and at http://www.ontario.ca/en/services_for_residents/ONT06_026364.html. There is also a list of FAQs available at http://www.ontario.ca/en/services_for_residents/ONT05_040490.html.
