Don't forget to double-check the Applicant's Checklist (country-specific) for any further requirements.

For example, in the US-specific country guide/checklist, it states in the 5th paragraph after:

10. Proof of Relationship to Sponsor:

If you are a common-law or conjugal partner, provide evidence that your relationship is genuine and continuing and has existed for at least 12 months prior to your application. Also provide details of the history of your relationship and at least two statutory declarations from individuals with personal knowledge of your relationship supporting your claim that the relationship is genuine and continuing.
Statutory declarations means that the writer(s) of the letter must swear in front of an appropriate official that the contents of the letter are true to their knowledge. It can be with a Commissioner of Oaths (if in Canada, any city clerk should be able to do this), the mayor, or a notary.

I don't know what other countries have similar requirements.
