Once we obtain the Confirmation of Permanent Residence document (outside Canada, PNP) and our passports have been returned from the embassy, and we landed in Canada, how much time does it take to obtain the Permanent Resident Card?

Do we need a permanent address at arrival, or can we stay at the hotel for a while in search for a permanent address?

Current trend is 2 to 3 months.

You need a permanent address IN Canada for them to send the PR card to. If it looks as if you are not able to provide one, they will not generate a PR card for you and you will have to apply for it yourself once you have an address available. They will not send the card outside Canada.

I guess hardly anyone arriving has a "permanent address". I mean you can't rent a place without being there, and sensible people wouldn't buy a place without seeing it either. So I guess one has to arrive and not go back to arrange the last things in the home country?

Not at all.. Many people who "land" return back to settle their affairs, including me. I have family in Canada, so I gave their address. I then had them courier (UPS) my PR card back to me here. This is quite a common scenario.
