You can carry as much as you want to but need to declare & state it's purpose if it's above $10000.

Thanks also one more question. I have a few very small amounts of different currencies as sovenirs. Can I take them with me? Do those also have to be declared?

It will take a lil amount of time to access your GIC account & its card as you need to do some paperworks formality visiting scotia bank only then you'll be able to use it. till then it's advisable to carry anything between $1000 to $2000 according to your needs & province to help yourself for food, accommodation, transport from airport to college or your accommodation etc stuff.
