I want to know whether there is any limit on the amount of cash a student can carry. I came to know if a person is carrying traveller cheque, then while depositing the cheque there are some transactions charges which will be deducted.. Pls post my valuable comments .....

If you carry $10,000 or more you have to declare it and you should have proof on where you got the money from or proof that it is yours.

according to above site..u can carry USD3000 or equivalent outside india in cash

I have no idea if there is an amount limit of how much cash you guys can take out of your country.
But in Canada as far as I know there is no limit of how much cash you can carry. (bring.) BUT $10,000 and up you have to declare and prove how you acquired it.

For anti-money laundering purposes.

So its safe and preferable to carry an amount less than 3000 USD......

what do you people feel is the next best option available to carry money from India to Canada.... travel cheque or travel card...

Cash is also travelcheques so you are still going to have to declare it if it is $10000 or more.

Bottom line is 10,000 or more declare with proof. Doesn't matter if it is actual cash or traveler's check.

As Per Canada customs/border website:
Travelling with CAN$10,000 or more

If you have currency or monetary instruments equal to or greater than CAN$10,000 (or the equivalent in a foreign currency) in your possession when arriving in or departing from Canada, you must report this to the CBSA. Monetary instruments include items such as stocks, bonds, bank drafts, cheques, and travellers' cheques.

We remind all travellers that this regulation applies to currency and monetary instruments you have on your person, in your baggage and in your vehicle.

Upon your arrival in Canada with CAN$10,000 or more in your possession, it must be reported on the CBSA Declaration Card (if one was provided to you), or in the verbal declaration made to a border services officer.

The above is quoted from the CBSA website.

The CBSA website is a great site to find out a lot of things, like what you can and can not bring to Canada. Every single international student should read it instead of listening to hear-say.

yes exactly.

I was just double checking things on there while this thread popped up. Now found out that I can't bring my bed. Not that I want to. I've been trying to sell it for a while as storage is going to cost an arm and a leg. In the end I figured I'd bring it as my shipping of other things is so cheap. Now I have to dump it somehow.

Weird. As a student, I can bring everything BUT the bed. Go figure.

I guess you can carry $3000 cash out side India. You can convert India rupee to canadian dollars using online currency converters like Travelex India

If the limit is 10,000$ then why the respected members are insisting on "less than 3000$ should be carried in cash" . why not 9,999$ as it is also < 10,000$.

3000 is probably india cash export limit not Canada.
Canada amount is unlimited but after 10,000 you have to declare it at customs and if its huge amount they might ask for proof that it is legal.
