How many visits can a UK resident be offered in one year to Canada?

Hi there,
I have a question about my boyfriend visiting Canada. His trip this time around is for 5 months, however, he's planning on returning back to the UK for 1 month then returning back to Canada. How long can he stay the 2nd time around? Does he need to apply for anything? He's here to build our relationship.

Thank you

There's no number.

Generally you want to ensure it's clear your visiting Canada and not trying to live here. So make sure you have a return ticket, financial proof (to show how you are going to fund your trip - and it doesn't harm to carry proof of ties to your home country (e.g. proof of employment, proof of property ownership). Once you are spending more time in Canada than outside of Canada - or returning to Canada quickly after a long visit - it's possible immigration may begin to examine your intentions for visiting Canada more closely.

Ultimately whether someone is allowed into Canada and for how long is up to the immigration officer they encounter at the border.

Thank you for your reply Scylla!
So when my boyfriend leaves to go back to the UK, one month after he returns, does he only have one more month that he can come back to Canada? since he has already fulfilled 5 months out of the 6 month max from his first visit for the year? or can he stay another 6 months? He has all the necessary documents to prove that he has ownership to a house and income from the UK. I'm just not sure how the 6 month max per year works exactly.
I hope this makes sense.

Thanks :)

I don't believe there is a six month maximum per year, it is a maximum of six months per visit.

A return ticket is essential, as is proof of funds, and proof of where he will be staying.

I wrote a letter for my SO for his last re-entry into Canada explaining how I would be supporting him during his visit. He didnt actually have any documents checked, and was given the standard 180 days.

He reentered Canada on December 29 2014 after his work permit expired and was given just 40 days. He returned to the UK Feb 10, and returned back to Canada most recently on March 23. If you count the 40 days plus the 180 it is over 6 months combined. :)

Be sure there is nothing on your boyfriends phone or laptop regarding work or moving here permanently. There should be nothing that CIC can find indicating that he plans to do anything but visit while he is in Canada.
