I landed in Vancouver on 28-jul-2010 and started by job search and last week i got contract job in my area of IT .
IT Job market in Canada is good.

I wanted to land in Toronto , but landed in Vancouver as my wife got transfer from her Indian employer to Vancouver.
Vancouver IT job opportunities are less as compared to Toronto.

Note: I had earlier worked in Toronto in 2006 for 8 months and my customer (fortune 500 company) was willing to give reference for me.

Before coming in May-2010 i had posted my resume on Monster and took virtual number for Toronto so that potential employers can call me locally(The call would get transferred to my mobile in India). This was expensive , but this is very important as we can test water before we land.

Please note my job search experience can be different as i have worked in Canada, USA, Singapore with big fortune 500 companies.
I would recommend testing waters before coming to Canada.

Also keep a copy of your police verification as employers as for the same.
Well, what do you specialize in? And Any tips for applying to IT jobs. Do certifications like MCTS etc. help.

Hi Tamkah,
can you elaborate a little on the type of starter jobs currently available?
Which ones can we hope to get without much prior experience?
Hi Honolulu,

When I was in school, I applied for IT jobs in university campus. I had good recomendation from my prof. so I didn't have any problem to get my first job but it was low paid help desk jobs only $10 an hour in the year of 2005. But I have got really good experience from my first job. My second job was one year paid internship in General Motors. I got the interview through my university job fair.

I think it is very important to be very flexible for first job. Get the experience first even though it is a low paid or volunteer job. You will land your dream job eventually when you have good experience.

You can also apply for a program with internship in colleges or universities. Most of the universities and colleges offer intership program in Accounting, Finance, IT and Engineering. That way you can have your canadian education and experience at the same time. If anyone has financial needs, he can apply for financial aids (bursaries, awards) and government loan program.

Thanks for putting your valuable input and job search exp. I think getting a contract job is good as you get more money in hand and can save taxes also. I am not expert but I heard this from my friends who is also into IT contract jobs.

btw How many interview calls you got in a week or month?

could you please tell further about this virtual number concept? . How we in India can get this and how expensive this option?
I think its worth to explore this option further .

Thanks again!

I am an applicant under the old rules, so getting a visa is still a long time away.

However, I am working in an Indian subsidiary of a large US-based IT MNC which has a very good presence in Canada as well (with offices in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver). I guess, once I get a visa, getting an internal company transfer (India office to Canada office) would be the best thing to happen. Not sure what are the realistic chances that it can happen.

By putting my resume on monster
I was able to get job in calgary
in June-2010. But since my wife got
at Vancouver I didn't join there.

Again I would reccommend everybody
to put ur resume on monster and check
the response. Initially I got response via
email.

Please don't come to Canada without
checking response for ur response

I think most of the IT guy are doing well
in india.don't burn ur personal savings
just for the sake of staying in Canada

living in canada in expensive than USA

Frankly No Canadian education , no Canadain White collar jobs.
This is my experience with my own eyes. People with Phd's from India or other countries have 5th grade Standard Acceptance in Canada.

Thanks again for clarification mailvdutt.

It means you got job offer from Calgary by giving interview only on phone from India.
This is really gr8. Did not they ask for F2F interview? I heard that most of the org insist on f2f interviews?

actually sometimes back I was also thinking on the same line and shared the same with one of my friend who is in Toronto into IT field . He discouraged me doing this. His point of view was that getting interviews calls means person has to go face2face interview and if candidate does not appear on the day org or recruitment agencies (as mostly recruitment agencies are active in Canada for job calls) will blacklist the person and would not call him again and this would be bad for the person for his actual job hunt.

thoughts?

Malu08,

IT world here is no different than Any other place in world.Phone interview are normal in IT world. I hope you know it since u are from IT.
The job calgary my first two rounds were over phone and next was over VC with their director.

What ur friend is saying is CRAP. Nothing of that sought exist here.

You should try this i don;t see any harm, when people used to call me i had told them that i would coming in August.
Some were willing to talk others told to call when i am there in Canada.

Just FYI my current job they interviewed me over phone ( i joined a Tele conference).
Yes i meet the consultant one on one. not the client.

Hi malivdutt,

My situation is that i currently live and work in US. i am a civil engineer by profession here. I did my MBA and masters in civil engineering, both in US too, then working for last 5 years. I also have a professional Engineering (P.E) license in US. My undergrad studies in civil engineering was in India though. I understand i have to be licensed in Canada and i am working towards it from now with all the applications. So my question is, Canada do not even accept US education, US work experience? I really hope they atleast acknowledge our US Engineering license and in the meantime we can get our canadian license. I talked with the canadian licensing board they seem to waive off many things who have US license. But i am not sure how the employer would treat. Do you have any idea or do you have any friend having similar situation like me?I got my pr card and am planning to move to canada soon. I have seen one thing its veryy rare chance that someone will get a job offer in canada while sitting in US. I am talking about our engineering field. Bcoz once u write american address and phone number they sometimes think applicant not much serious. But again, i mayb wrong. i hope i am wrong:)
