Hi there,

We have just submitted our application for permanent residency and are keeping our fingers crossed that all goes well with it.

It has taken up a lot of our time and we had to take a break from the contract work we were doing, but now we want to get back to our lives while we are waiting.

We do contract work for a travel company around the world and are lining up more contracts but are wondering what would happen if we were away travelling for several months if and when CIC requested my passport?
That might be not be for a year or so (depending on processing times) but we could be abroad then.

Do you get given a set time period within which to submit your passport or can you postpone this for a few months until you are ready?

It would be great to find out if anyone knows about this.

Thanks very much
P

If CIC makes any request, whether it be for your passport or additional information or new photos or whatever, they may request it via email, or they may send you a letter. If you supplied an email to them, then about 99% chance they'll do any correspondence via email. But still a slim chance they send a letter instead.

If they do request your passport, then it depends if they request just copies of your passport, in which case it's a colour copy of the whole passport, or whether they request the physical passport itself. If you are British (I'm guessing you are since you posted in the outland via London thread) then if they do request your passport, which is unlikely, they will very likely just request the copy.

If it were me, I'd be staying put, or just doing short terms instead of a weeks-long trip. If you have someone who can check your mail for you, and if you are willing to fly back to the UK on short notice to submit your passport if it's requested, then your plan might work, but you need to plan for all eventualities.

as stated above, if you are visa exempt, you will not need to send in your passport. the visa office will request a copy of the bio page to issue your approval. how long they give you depends on the visa office, and it will be referenced in the request. through ottawa, i was given 45 days to submit a copy of my passport.
